Default PC police attack Dante's "Divine Comedy"

I'm surprised this hadn't happened yet, but still good for a laugh
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/c...be-banned.html
The classic work should be removed from school curricula, according to Gherush 92, a human rights organisation which acts as a consultant to UN bodies on racism and discrimination.

Dante's epic is "offensive and discriminatory" and has no place in a modern classroom, said Valentina Sereni, the group's president.

Divided into three parts – Hell, Purgatory and Heaven – the poem consists of 100 cantos, of which half a dozen were marked out for particular criticism by the group.

It represents Islam as a heresy and Mohammed as a schismatic and refers to Jews as greedy, scheming moneylenders and traitors, Miss Sereni told the Adnkronos news agency.

"The Prophet Mohammed was subjected to a horrific punishment – his body was split from end to end so that his entrails dangled out, an image that offends Islamic culture," she said.
Next they should go after Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, with its stereotypical Jewish shyster character or Gibbon's Decline and Fall, where the author describes the Koran as an:
endless incoherent rhapsody of fable, and precept, and declamation, which seldom excite a sentiment or an idea, which sometimes crawls in the dust, and is sometimes lost in the clouds.

Forget about any works of classical literature then.

You could just as easily ban the Quran because it doesn't accept Jesus as the messiah and the Bible because it does. You could ban an endless list of philosophical works because they all disagree with some other school of thought.

It's very well to not let kids' TV shows tell little kids that Muslims are dirty infidels and Jews are scheming money-lenders, but I doubt that people reading classic literature are going to let it shape their stance on race or ethics.

....So? ''It offends Islamic culture'', why should that matter? If we banned anything that might offend someone else we'd end up banning nearly everything.

There were no 1-5. There were only 3 teams created.

    I'm pretty sure that's a double bluff.

Political Correctness implies Factually Wrong but Politically Palatable. Otherwise it would just be Correctness.

Politically Correct is talking about poverty among blacks. After all voicing the plight of the dark skinned poor is sure to get votes. Correct is recognizing "Black People" don't actually exist. It's akin to the growing poverty of red haired people.

That's why I'm going to found the Congressional White Caucus. Chitlins, hog maws, collared greens, corn bread, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, and water melon for everyone! It's only racist because I hate black people. I only hate black people because I don't believe they exist.

There's a difference between whether we believe in hell or whether we ban ancient literature due to percieved insults to our own beliefs.

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable. Let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

I don’t understand this attitude at all. I expect schools to teach how to distinguish between opinions that were acceptable 700 years ago and opinions that are acceptable today.
When did we get so sensitive that we can’t even be allowed to know what people used to think in the past?

In case you missed it I'm the one saying banning it is stupid. If I support studying the Bible and other religious documents in the proper context, why would I not support the study of this.

I did not say anything about banning it.

Times change and its wise to change with them, obviously in this case because its part of the curriculum and being taught to people it may be sensible with a limited amount of choices to choose something else, to be honest I don't give a hoot.

I would however be up in arms if seal hunting was removed from the curriculum.
