    Default New to Rome

Hey, I'm a Medieval II kingdoms vet and just got Rome today and was wondering if there were any mods that I must have, like the Stainless Steel mod for kingdoms?

Or mods that would at least increase the unit roster? I noticed that most of the factions don't have great variation in units. For example Gaul and Britons are nearly the same. I like factions to have a huge play difference much like the factions in Kingdoms, most factions have various unique units in Kingdoms.

    Thanks!

Play Roma Surrectum - Large detailed Map, improved graphics, new factions, big unit rosters, ...

Exactly what you search, I think.

There are many awesome mods that you might to try out.
For instance, Roma Surrectum II (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=251)
    eXtended Cultures (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1101)
    And Rome Total Realism (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26)

All of these add improvements to the game, like advanced unit rosters, advanced recruitment, and bigger campaign maps, they also upgrade the textures of the units of the factions and add completely new factions to the game.

And frankly chose anything but vanilla for anything approximating reality.

It would be a great shame if Europa Barbarorum was not suggested

I honestly think he should get a chance and play atleast one full vanilla campaign before going to mods because some things are really different from M2TW.

I personally liked Troy Total War and Rome Total Realism. Rise of Persia gets a bunch of attention due to time period and historical accuracy, but i personally find it a little less..."complete" compared to some other mods. Persian Invasion has some excellent units (especially for the greek factions), but is lacking in the others. I have New Shadow due to LOTR connectivity, but was...disappointed.

Troy Total War and Realism are the two i would reccomend the most. Both have pretty much unique factions/rosters/altered map/new gameplay options etcetc. Both are done and polished, and couldn't get much better. Troy is more for the time period than anything. Units per faction tend to be pretty much the same, but the skins are all unique, and the mod is fun. Realsim, my only complaint was with the rosters. They split recruitment between "faction specific" recruitment, and "localised" recruitment, which varies depending on region. As a result, some of the factions have barely a handful of faction-specific units.

I've not played Surrectum, but have heard a lot about it. However, i heard that it was primarily made as a "Rome" specific mod, with huge emphasis on the roman faction, so if youre not a fan of the legions i don't know how good it'd be for you.

If you get Alexander expansion, Arestia Total war is the sequal to Troy total war. Also, keep an eye on the beta's. There is, for example, a Hellenistic Total War which looks like it would be amazing...when/if it gets finished.

And i only play the full-conversion mods. Personally, i find minor game modifications to not be worth the download.

Most full conversion mods I know of radically change the game though. Europa Barbarorum is very, very good, but it's almost a different game. Roma Surrectum also changes a lot, but I didn't really like that one judging from the few hours I've tried it. Rise of Persia for example has a more vanilla feel, gameplay wise (I think), but changes the timeperiod. Maybe RTR is closer to original gameplay? Not sure! I'd say Rome vanilla is fun to play through once as the Romans, and then maybe a barbarian faction
Oh, also Invasio Barbarorum feels quite vanilla. Time period changes to late roman Empire though.

So it depends on how close you want to stay to vanilla. Europa Barbarorum or Roma Surrectum offer completely new building trees, for example. And they slow the combat down (quite a lot, too), while the pace is closer to vanilla with the latter two.
