Help with graphics please

I got Rome TW and it runs really laggy on my computer. 1280 x720 res with auto detected settings.

(CA)They are bragging about the amount of soldiers on the battle field but this kills the performance and frames per second.

I have a P4 3.0 GHZ tried it stock and overclocked to 3.22 with not much improvement.

ATI X1800XT 512mb tried it stock and overclocked as well

SATA hdd

1 stick of 1 gig of ram

The game is 2 years old and it should run with all maxed out, the problem is the amount of units. Am I right? How can you have even more units with even more eye candy and run the game smoothly? a 3.4 and up processors are crazy expensive and doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

I don't even though if an extra gig or ram would help

I turned all my other programs off and killed lal the processes on the task manager and still nothing.

Well, realistically, not many PCs can run this sort of game at max settings without much lag.

You could either keep all the high settings but reduce unit size to large or normal instead of huge, or, you could edit the graphical details.

I find that a huge lag factor is the Anti Aliasing, if you reduce this to none it should make a big improvement. Changing the terrain and grass detail down a notch will also help, and also decreasing the resolution will make a large difference, generally speaking the higher resolution the less frames per second.

My PC is a P4 3.0GHZ, with a 128MB graphics card and 512 MB ram, but, given enough tweaking, my RTW works fairly smoothly, i just reduce unit size and detail.

p4's suck =/ all the GHZ means nothing considering a 2.4 ghz amd would kill a 3.2 P4

Auto detect is useless and everytime I tested it, I always lagged. Start off at the minimum and go up until your happy.
