What's your favourite special forces/assault unit, for taking walls, or smashing through a line? As a dedicated Arche-o-phile, mine have to be:

Basically all infantry units with high lethality and/or ap-ability, and decent armour... and if they have some javs, even better.
Btw, there's a sweet submod somewhere that adds all important unit stats to the unit info cards, for anyone that hasn't got them memorized. (I had to mentione that )

I presume you're speaking specifically regarding infantry, yes? Because (if you're willing to blow the cash) several heavy cavalry units are nearly perfect for wrecking a line prior to your infantry moving in ...

For Walls:
Pedites Extraordinarii
Neitos
Rycalawre and Solduros

Very much a western Europe player, so that's what I'm familiar with; I like my wall-takers high Armour and good Shield. I will go it with lesser troops, but I don't usually care about which particular unit goes up, so long as it can fight on a wall-top.

For Linebreaking:
Kluddargos (and to a lesser degree, their Lugian cousins)
Carnute Cingetos
Rhomphaiaphoroi
Worgozez (and to a lesser degree, Woithiz Watha)
Pictone Neitos

Not something I do very often, because I usually prefer to engage in a line-to-line match, then send heavy units (and/or cavalry) to sweep the flanks in.

Oh believe me, I've seen dozens of full battle lines rolled up by a thunderous Hetairoi charge. Nothing more satisfying.

Iberian Assault Infantry. The name says it all.

Meh, I never really rated them. Certainly, they were no trouble when I fought Karthadast as the AS.

AP sword, great morale and stamina, awesome defence and high lethality to boot. Basically Eastern Rhomphaioroi, although they're slightly better IMO. The Indian Longbowmen can do quite well too; they have the same sword for their melee weapon, although their armour rating leaves a lot to be desired.

"Agrarian" as in "cattle stampede"?

Seriously though, Agrianians are a good choice. As are the Peltastai Makedonikoi, the first picture in this thread. The aforementioned Elite Thracians are also available in the provinces immediately to the north of Makedonia. In Italy, you can use Samnite swordsmen.

These are quite a good choice:

They're not necessarily my most used assult infantry (as they lack the ap-ability) or the best of the best (stat-wise), but they look impressive and I'm quite fond of the Galatians.

They have a longsword with 0.225 lethality (and a secondary spear for cavalry), 12 armour and a large '4'-shield (especially helpful on walls), decent morale, are disciplined and... they're fairly cheep considering they're stats und unit size.

AOR though, its a hassle to ship them over the map.

It is indeed. On my current AS file I trek them from Taksashila over to Antiocheia in groups of ~2000, where I keep lots of them in forts for when I need them. It's just too inefficient to ship 2/3 across when you need them. The Rhomphaoioioioi have a much better, more central AoR, that is certainly true.

They are pretty good, particularly if you're Rome and looking for good Heavy Spear units, but the small AoR makes them difficult to acquire.

Meh, I never really rated them. Certainly, they were no trouble when I fought Karthadast as the AS.

They actually are really awesome units - they have slightly superior stats than Pedites Extraordinarii (slightly better Attack, better Range for the spear, one more spear, AP for the spear ...) and are Hardy. If I ever played as Karthadast long enough to get the reforms (might have done it once ... have to find the save, see if they triggered), I would use them a lot.

Tindanotae so far, with honorary mention to OG´s of peltast-business, Thracian Peltasts. In my Hayasdan campaign, one single TP took over 10 000 arrows to kill, and all because he turned his back. His name was probably Chuck. Plus they are awesome all around unit.

That's like ... almost the entire ammo supply of three archer units with 35 arrows/man on Huge. How did one peltast manage to just sit in one spot for ten minutes with three archers pouring fire into him? What was the rest of your army doing?

He was standing in middle of the ford, (None shall pass!) in Neilos Delta. Of course those pansy phalangites kept away.

And it was six full strength persian archer units, who fired about ten volleys.
