    Default Close defeat

I was happy cutting up France as England. When I got a surprise "Close defeat". Bordeaux was the city of interested, after killing the King second time in two turns (he attacked me both times). I assaulted the city instead of a siege, the city had only 3 units and I brought a catapult. After a fairly long wall demolition phase, I rushed the breach with 4 units heavy cavalry. They were doing their job and killed the french general.
TADA Close defeat , I am still a bit confused why did I lose?
Is this the weird AI everybody is referring to?

Please bear in mind this is my very first TW campaign.

did you run out of time? This causes a win for the defending side. other than that dunno!

Yep if you play with timed battles that is probably what happened.

Yes I've experienced that, pretty darn irritating. It is the most likable after a "fairly long" wall-breaching-phase. What you can do, is to hit escape before assaulting the city, and there change the game options, so you do have no time limit. However, just remember to put it back, once you're done sieging! It can get way more irritating if you have to defense a siege against the AI with unlimited time!

You guy's know that you can change it in the menu just before you start a new campaign right?

And they are talking about in the campaign right before the battle. So for field battles you can have unlimited time, and defending sieges a limited time. While you are true, switching it in-campaign is much more helpful and convenient

Ouch I hate when that happens. That is why I like sending in spies before a Siege. They open the doors and you can go right in and kill everyone you see. I did that as Egypt and it worked out well for me.

Hmm didn't think of the time limit, thanks for the answers. Meanwhile got ex-communicated while my king is stuck on a ship with a full deserted crusade stack, because maintaining a siege is a hostile action (new lesson). Killed the french king again, you would think they would learn.
Time to rip-up France and suicide my king in the holy land.

Another possibility is that you ran out of ammunition. You loss if your siege engines have no more shots, and there is still one more layer of wall to go through to make it to the capture zone. Especially if you used up all your pre-made engines, such as ladders and rams, the game will call you the loser.

Why did it take you so long...?
If there was only 1 general inside, you needed only 1 - 2 breaches at most.
And did you know you can also use your artillery on the gates?
Also, try to keep the damage you do to a minimum if you want to hold that settlement,
cause you're gonna have to pay for the repairs later, and if you sack the city some buildings will be destroyed.

    hope these tips will help

It took so long because I only had 1 incomplete unit of catapults (or I should say catapult with 14 persons).
I indeed found I could take down the gate with artillery.
Thanks for the tips and responses.
