Default Do I have to actually GO to the crusade?

I want to get credit with the Pope and his crowd so I've taken a general and put together an army. But I don't want to actually get on the boat and try to get to Jerusalem. I don't think I can do it in time anyway. I want to wait for the crusade to be over, get credit for "participating" and then use my army on someone closer to home.

    Is this a viable plan?

Your plan sounds logical, but your army will gradually desert if you don't make progress towards the crusade target each turn. If you keep them in one place doing nothing for several turns, you will soon find your army has run away, leaving only your general (he will never desert). If I was you, I wouldn't join, seeing as though the time is almost up. There's really nothing the Pope can do about it

Well a neat little trick you can do is if the target city is under siege and looks like it will fall, is to take ALL the troops you can and put them into armies with generals, get all of them to join the Crusade, and when the Crusade ends next turn, put them all back into their cities again. Every single unit will gain +1 veterancy, increasing their damage and defense skill, and you'll receive a lot of money from the Pope. Of course, save before you do this, in case it doesn't work out and you have loads of rebellions.

I have a similar question actually. On my Scottish campaign I joined the crusade, put my army on a fleet and then the English declared war on me and destroyed me fleet. They were excommunicated straight away, but will I still get my reputation (respectively keep it) with the Pope now if I dont sent a new Crusade army?

Strange, normally as I understood it, a crusading army/fleet can't be attacked by a another catholic faction, so are you sure they weren't excommunicated before?

Your crusading army/fleet CAN be attacked by catholic factions (they'll get excommunicated though), but they cannot attack other catholic factions.

If you join the turn before the target city falls though, you get all the benefits (generals get better traits, troops get +1 exp) plus you get to recruit Crusader mercs, without having to do much. After a while, you get uber-exp units.

Yip the English attacked my fleet (and declared war on me) when it was their turn in the round and at the end of the round they got excommunicated for it. But thanks for your answer, my reputation with the pope should stay as high as it is then.

@eXistenZ Yeah making an alliance is a much too easy way to improve your reputation at the Pope I think coz they seem to always accept an alliance unless you are not catholic or have a bad general reputation. But I just wanted to know if this will afftect my standing with the Pope because my crusader army was totally destroyed, but from your answers I think it doesn't.

the pope doesn't care if your army was destroyed, if you don't create another crusading army he will get mad at you

Didnt knew this. can be quite handy. So i can let like 20 family members join a crusade (each with their 10units army), just before the crusade target falls, and they all gain traits? sweet

if you wanna get closer with the pope, making an alliance with him, and giving him a small tribute+map information will also help. i only go on crusade when i have called it myself

The best way to get into a crusade without loosing troops (desertion) is this; When the Crusade is called don't join just yet prepare your troops and general(s), depending where you are and where the crusade is, send them via Boat (moves faster) get as close as possible then before the last turn where you can join do it join the crusade, that way you should be farely close to the target city and you didnt loose troops because of dersertion. If you troops desert it won't help your reputation with the Pope.

That is a trcik indeed but for me that is cheating, taking advantage of the AI, giving that it's already struggling to give the player the proper challenge (vanilla game not mods) I wouldn't do that.

Yes you will still get your reputation boost and the faction that attacked you will get a real downfall, I find this always funny when it happens lol.

That is true as a matter of fact it is true with any faction on the map, maybe except the other religions factions. Reputation is the key to give the player a great diplomatic experience, havng a bad reputation will make the game that much harder for the player IMO.

anh ow much money would i get? i know that for a decent crusader army you get as reward about 1000+ florins. will this increase if i go on crusade with more armies? and will the unit type be of effect? cause i plan to let all governors stand outisde their city with 10 militia units (im playing venice)

Nope you won't get more money from the Pope the Pope gives you the money when you join after that if you join with more armies it won't give you more, maybe (not sure about this) it will give you a boost regarding your reputation with him. For the efefct I'm assuming that you mean gain the XP once the crusade is completed? If so only the army that conquers gets that bonus in XP.

oh no, sorry, my mistake, it doesn't matter if your army gets destroyed, he gets upset only if you don't manage to join the crusade within the time limit (10 turns or so) ; if you join the crusade on time he will be pleased even if your army gets destroyed afterwards
