I ran out of time

I wasn't close to having sufficient regions under my control when time ran out. Is there a way to set "no time limit" or do I just have to sharpen my game playing?

I was playing as England and seemed to keep getting attacked from all sides. The Mongols held off for a long time but finally I guess they were too strong and I was too tempting an enemy.

It's a fascinating game but I still have a lot to learn. On to the next one.

You can try going into the desc-strat (i believe it is) and change the timescale that will give you more turns to play through the game . .. . you can also change the end date of the game, though personally i recomend the timescale change.

or you could just conquer the whole map... even if you've lost, if you conquer every settlement it will pop up with the victory message

Wait What happens once you get to the last year of the game ?. you can not just continue afterwards ?

Yep

But if you haven't fulfilled the victory conditions by the final year, you will have lost the campaign (but you can still continue playing)

Indeed. Someone on this forum posted a screenshot of his game with the in-game year being 2012.

As stated before, you can change the timescale.

default is .. something like 1080 .. to 1480
and a turn = 2.00

so one turn = 2 years

change it to turn = .50 and then one turn = 6 months, and so on.
