    Default Spartan Hoplites

    Hello!

    Just a question:

I play with the greek cities, but I just can't build Spartan Hoplites. I checked if you need a temple of some sort, but in the in-game "Techtree" the Spartan Hoplites aren't shown.

Am I missing something? Can somebody help me?

Sorry, I searched the forum but didn't found an answer.

    Thank you!

I think i have only ever played as greece once so someone may need to correct me here. You need to build an advanced barracks to build spartans (possibly the most advanced greek one) and on the description of that barracks it should say that it enables the building of spartans. If i remember correctly you can only build spartans in the first city you build this advanced barracks (and sparta as well i think). To make that clearer: I built my first one of these barracks in syracuse in sicily. This meant i could build spartans in sicily but not anywhere else i built this barracks. However, i think i could still get them from sparta. Therefore, i think you can only have sparta and one other province produce spartans.

Someone may need to completely correct this though

in early versions of rtw there was bug that allow to produce spartans in syracuse but it was fixed with some patch i think...
generally you can only recruit spartan hoplites in sparta in highest level barracks
if you want to recriut them anywhere edit export_descr_units file in your data folder find the line:

    recruit "spartan_hoplites" 0 requires factions { greek_cities, } and hidden resources sparta

and delete >and hiddeen resources sparta<

It wasn't a bug, I think. Just a way to make Spartans more accessible. Yet most mods only allow spartans to be build in Sparta.

Um, there is no export_descr_units file in the Data folder. There is a "export_descr_unit file", but that does not contain a <recruit "spartan_hoplites" 0 requires factions { greek_cities, } and hidden resources sparta>line anywhere. Was this changed for 1.5 or are we talking about two different things here?

I'm playing as the greek now and wonder: can you atleast retrain them in other cities with an army barracks? I haven't built any yet because I didn't know if they could be replenished.

just make sure your economy is doing really well before you start pumping out spartans, those guys arnt cheap, building loads when you only have a stable income will result in a bad income, men fight your battles but money pays them, without money not matter how many sparten units you have the will shrink and you wont even be able to get lesser troops, just think about this, spartans may win you the battle but not the war on their own, well they could if you you had enough , just rember that, alot of my campagains as any factions result in me using some strong infantry like cohorts instead of urban or pretorain becasue of money, and the same goes for the elites of other armies

I've found I don't need the Spartans because Armored Hoplites, when flanks are covered, are troops to be feared. At least, when the computer fightes me on medium/medium. Maybe I'll try hard next campaign.

I've heard Syracuse was a spartan-esque colony, so I suppose it sorta makes sense. Even if that isn't so, it makes them more accessible...which I think is dumb. Spartan Hoplites came from Sparta, they are powerful, and should be rare.

I think Syracuse was founded by Sparta (though Im probably wrong), and the Spartans did go off and fight for the Syracusans. Of course, Tarantum was founded by Spartans too and they were far from valiant warriors.

Spartan homoioi were around 8,000 or so at the height of Sparta, and half of them were needed to be rooted in Sparta to keep watch on the helots. Because they married late in life and had a life concentarted around military service, their population never grew greatly.

Spartans should only be trainable in Sparta, but I do think that it would be an interesting idea to make other Spartan type units (skiritai rangers, periokoi/mothax hoplites, helot auxilaries)

Yes, Syracuse was Sparta's colony. During the Peloponesian War, Sparta even sent help to Syracuse.

However, I find out that you can also build Spartan Hoplite in Rome... That's one thing I really don't understand, Rome has no connection with Sparta right?

well yes, but then again 2 provinces in a potential of some 50? relatively close to each other (but yet still far away), would still take some time to build up proper armies and ship them off to where u want them to go.

If we go into historical accuracy then i don't think we should be able to build many (not enough for them to make the bulk of a large army anyway. I think the most full spartan citizens in one army was 5000 and thats when they got as many as they could afford to take. So for a large army we're talking 10-20% max is spartans. Personally i think they should be cheaper, less upkeep but have a longer build time. They deffinately shouldn't be made in syracuse either.

The file is export_descr_buildings, that's where building and unit recruitment are set.

erm i think ur wrong here mate as far as i know Taras was the only colony founded by sparta. Im sure they only sent aid to Syracuse to hinder Athens...

But i think the reason why syracuse can trainthem in vanilla was answered somewhere i think it was somehting like Syracuse was given the ability to train spartans so you had the ability in the west and the east to do this and is just the victory target so this is prob why u can build them here.
