Is there a certain way to use the patches you need and don't need when installing this game and expansion?

If you have both RTW and BI, install RTW, install BI and it will install RTW's patches at the same time, then install the BI 1.6 patch as it contains RTW's 1.5 patch.

The way to tell which version you're actually playing is to look on the top right hand side of the Options Menu. When playing with the RTW exe it should be 1.5, when playing with the RTW BI exe it should be 1.6 when playing with the RTW Alex exe it should be 1.9.
