Needs help/tips with certain heavy axe units
For some reason I was under the impression that the axe units were fixed in the latest update, apparently they were not. It seems that the axe units that utilize a shield have a problem with their charge sequence. I ran a few tests with the varangians vs. mamluks and vs. ghazi heavy axes. Varangians suffer catastrophic losses during the initial contact with the enemy. The enemy units usually lose 3-6 soldiers while the varangians' losses are around 20-25 usually.
Is there any kind of work-around this problem at this time? Is there any possible way to utilize the varangians to prevent them from suffering these type of losses when they charge?
I would appreciate any help.

Re: Needs help/tips with certain heavy axe units
bump
Can someone please help me with this? I'd like to start a new campaign with the Romans as I've never played with them in BC before. I've read that it is possible to work around the varangian charging problem somehow in the actual game without making changes to any files. As if there's some way to time the charge in a fashion that enables varangians to be effective.
Another fix someone pointed out is making changes to the export_descr_unit file. Is this the most effective way to fix the problem? Is it possible to make the varangians simply use only their one-handed animation during the charge and melee so that they don't have to make the switch from two hands to one hand?

Hi DirtyACE, I tried to answer by sending to you private messge but I'm not sure if I did It correctly so I'm writtinge here.
Unfortunately I changed my version of BC to newer and some of my changes are lost.
But I can tell you what you sholud do:
In case of Templar knights It is quite simple, just open export_descr_unit (data folder), and find (ctrl+f) dismounted Templar knights unit.
Then change lines as I described(post from your link) and save.
In case of both Varangian units it is much more complicated. This link will be helpful if you want to change units on your own: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=412456.
I also can try to send to your email files changed by me (ere_varangians_lod0 and ere_elite_varangian_axemen_lod0) and you will replaced your files (from BC>data> unit_models>units>romans) by mine.
I'm not sure but probably you sholud also change sequence of animations in battle_models file (BC>data>unit_models>battle models).
So firstly try change Templar Knight and If It work I will try to help you with Varangians!
