Default SEGA announces Mobile Total War series

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...battles-series

Superb PC strategy series Total War is being recreated for mobile platforms in a new series called Total War Battles, Sega has announced.

A new team within Creative Assembly, the Total War Digital team, will build the games using the renowned Unity engine.

The team's been hard at work prototyping for the last 12 months.

Specific Total War Battles platforms and game details weren't mentioned by Sega. We presume iPad will be a strong contender, as will iPhone.

"This isn't the traditional Total War you might expect," commented lead designer Renaud Charpentier.

"We are working on a title that is specifically tailored to the play styles and control methods of mobile platforms. We want to deliver a game that plays to the strengths of handheld RTS mechanics, and perfectly adapts to a host of different platforms.

That's one part of the foreseeable future for TW games.

Soooo wrong. First they shoot down consoles in the near future, then they say there is going to be a mobile release.

    BOOOOO!

Unless it is a great game that will have higher quality version for 3DS and Vita. Then YAY!!!

lol a higher quality version? The ipad3 destroys both of those in specs as does the 2. The ipad with its large screen, good specs and ability to output to a hdmi tv is the best platform for this.

this is wonderful news and I cant wait to see it!

Er no this is a very ignorant statement. Look up shadowgun, aralon, infinity blade, or any other number of stellar (for a mobile device) looking games on iphone

I think it could work, if it's redone enough and doesn't try to just rebuild the PC version too much.

I would think that if they did do this, it would be for iPad or some kind of Windows tablet first. If they did though, they'd probably eventually make it for Kindle Fire.

Wow, I know many people will get angry over this news. But I'd definitively love a mobile TW game.

They are a company, they try to make money. That's what companies do; they're not charities.

I'm not interested at all on a mobile TW game, I don't even have a smartphone or Ipad and I don't plan to buy one BUT it's obvious its a good move for the company.

Also, keep in mind that it will propably be very, VERY different from the TW we're used to. I don't expect tons of units, large maps or diplomacy beyond Peace/War + give some moneys etc.
Perhaps it would just be custom battles and historical battles with simplified controls. Also I expect like 30 soldiers/unit or something, else they won't be able to fit those small screens.

    I agree.
Considering the number of mobile devices sold, It is easy to understand why Sega is interesting in.
Sega goes where it find a possible market.

Of course, this type of game will be necessarily different from TW :
    • it's not the same playing on a 5" to 12" screen than on a 22" or 27" one.
    • hardware capabilities aren't the same too.

Sega clearly want to benefit of Total War brand aura to attract customers.
I hope they will be warn that the game will be different from classic TW...
Not the same kind of propaganda than the "most moddable TW game we ever made"

This is not annoying if CA create a new team to develop this game and continue to develop and enhance "classic" Total War as tactic and strategy game, not simplifying it.
But I fear that is not what Sega want.

CraigTW already wrote in Total War Center Forums > Total War: Shogun 2 > Total War: Shogun 2 General Discussion > TW series and Paradise lost........Why TW games don't move me anymore

Now that I see STW with gatling guns (which is nice), the entire series EVEN RTW mods have me with a severe case of lost interest in this series.

    Why?
Well, it all started when I started looking at game called Les Grognards and seeing the richness that that particular game IS.

The fire was fueled by reading books about the campaigns of Napoleon by David G. Chandler along with his works on Marlborough & 17th century warfare and Theodore Ayrault Dodge's books on Alexander, Caesar, Gustav Adolphus and Napoleon.

It progressed after reading books like Command in War by Martin Van Creveld and such.

It reached its' zenith with watching veterans coming back from Iraq & Afghanistan (I work at the local V.A. Medical Center a mile away from my home and I'm also a disabled veteran.)

    Essentially these salient points:
    I. Historically accurate Strategic developments are not researched and subsequently provided to the player
II. Historical accurate Tactical developments are lacking also.....See above
III. No Strategic/Tactical/Logical overlay maps synthesizing the dynamicism of warfare
IV. Constant issues with Sega/Ca and having AI which properly portrays each level of difficulty

It is a shame to view past Activision/Sega CA titles with the developments today but one is left thinking "Will this era be covered again PROPERLY and FULLY with the now realized computer technologies available?" I don't really know personally.

So, OK if they want to develop a strategy game for mobile devices (something I'm not interesting for), it is their problem, but only if they develop "classic" TW depth such as supply line, depth diplomacy system, etc.

And I fear that the answer will be "no"... if they even give an answer.

I dont know how would that effect the normal releases, but if they drop their quality because of mobile releases etc, total war will die for the fan base that resemble my tastes.
