Default Returning player in for a surprise

I've recently been playing Shogun 2, but while waiting for FOTS I thought now would be a good time to play some NTW. I was pretty late with ETW because of needed computer upgrades and stuff, and I ended up playing only a little of NTW because I bought it not too long before STW2 came out.

So I started up the Italian Campaign on VH. There's nothing like a rushed conquest campaign where every battle counts, but which is still relatively easy in terms of opposition, to guide myself back into it.

After quite a few turns I ran into an old nemesis I had completely forgotten about, who came back at me with a vengeance: After a very long and hard fought battle all that remained was to mop up the fleeing infantry while my dragoons took out the last enemy artillery unit on the far side of the map, when my all important general and commander got killed (well, injured in his case) chasing down routing militia.

It had been quite some time since I'd seen my old foe, the ridiculously-pointless-general-death-chasing-down-fleeing-units, and he was soon joined by that wise old sage, the rage quit.

Did you shoot him with a cannon or something?

Nope, cannons where limbered and everything. Everybody was on melee and no fire at will, all the enemy forces were routing or shattered except for the last artillery unit they had, but they were aiming squarely at my dragoons who came from their rear. I seem to remember this happening to me a fair bit back in the old ETW days, but had forgotten about it after never really seeing it in STW2.

Of course it could just be my scumbag brain playing tricks on me, can never trust a brain.

It's no big deal really, just really took me by surprise but at the same time it was a very familiar feeling, which I deemed noteworthy for some reason. I'll just stop using my generals to chase.

    A) never had this happen to me, perhaps a stray bullet...?
    B) You shouldn't use your general as a cavalry unit and then complain if he dies

i was invading Sweden last night, battle going great, destroyed them in the first battle of the war. Enemies routing everywhere, used my general to defend a flank so after they were on the run i moved him back to the middle of my line. Was about to route the last artillery piece when i notice my general dies..... looked back and he just happened to be sitting right in front of my cannons..... not cool

Yeah that sucks. I'd learned early on in ETW to be very mindful of my artillery. I always micro them.

Oh. I didn't know that could happen. I guess it makes sense for a routing enemy to fight back....

    Still sucks though.

Yeah I suppose they wouldn't want to just be mowed down without maybe trying to at least stab at something. Who knows, maybe the general foolishly joined the chasers and they can turn the tide of the war with one blind swing.

Either way I think the days of my generals leading from the front are over..

I wish troops could just surrender. That would solve everything.

And then reinstate that option to kill prisoners taken during the battle like MTW? I can still hear that sound..
