Wow!!!

Ok heres the story: I was Eastern Roman Empire on a medium diffculty on battles and campain, and horde of vandals decided to attack my large city called Sirmium with large stone wall...Now i had to work with my faction heir, 6 unit of limitanei, 2 unit of comitatenses, and 2 unit of eastern archers. The vandals had about 4500 units. Now I knew that I could not block them from destroying the wall and comming in so I made 2 archers on the walls with flame ammo to kill many as they can, and everyone eles was at the courtyard waiting for them. After my archers dying they began to swarm in. Because of my wall, many of them was dying on their way to the courtyard. Then I realized that their army was mostly horses and all i had was spearmens.. wat a luck. another weekness they had was that, about the time they got to the courtyard, they were tired. heres the screen shots.

This is the archers i had to sacrifice to get rid of some of them.

I just had to post this because I have never gotten in such a battle before. Oh and Hi, im a big fan of rome total war and i hope i can enjoy my stay here!

Hi and welcome to TWC. fighting on the townsquares and on briges are the most effective ways to stop the hordes. try to save your eastern archers whenever you can because they are very powerful weapon especialy against horse archers.

Hah! Nice win! Yeah whenever your faced with an overwhelming horde assaulting your city, you did the right thing. Fall back and hold the courtyard at all costs. The enemy will be tired and archers and towers from your wall will have inflicted huge casualties!

really nice

I had beaten slav's army with 429 hun cavalry.They have 2132 men and some of them chosen warriors.It's massacre.I have killed 1969 men.But they have killed about 200 cavalry:wink:

i once held an epic city where they had surrounded it but it took them so long to get to the center the time limit went so i won through time

I fight with no time limit but in creates a problem. The enemy never tries to enter! its always a stalemate unless I sally forth to meet them.

I did notice an AI bug where at start of battle when I am defending, AI moves troops across field to another spot. Rather single minded about ti and can send troops out fast to kill quite a few attacking from behind.

anyway, what am I missing? with no time limit attackers just sit there.....

today and yesterday and tomorrow, i beat many "imperial" persian armies of 4 cataphracts 4 ciibriani (sp?) ,3 (three) units of ) elephants and other kick**** units each with my full stack sarmatian auxilia army, i love this units, they beat everything, including elephants (most enemies start rioting when they have 1.5k horses chargning at them)

i have beaten any possible army of the game with my fullstack sarmatian auxilia armies. with 1 full stacks and cities lik Ravenna (cristhian, the pagan experience bonnus is dont needed) to refill ur units after each battle you can literally (i did ) defeat the goth/vandal/sarmatian/hunnic and slav hordes . and now im triying to conquer ALL the provinces and converting them to cristhianity (since i converted the whole western empire , and gemrania and africa, cristhianity is the dominant religion of my campaign)

my favorite general atribute is BELIVE OR DIE!

i had a similar experience with that..

the hun hordes, about 7 fuly stacked armies were be seiging constantinople, i sent 4 large armies consisting of infantry archers , spearmen and cavalry..we won hands down, so much for the huns being feared lol.

The trick is to hold the bridges. This works a treat with the ERE, just hold the Danube with lost of archers and a few good spearmen. The hordes are comprised mostly of very weak units that can easily be defeated if they have to charge head on to tough Roman troops.

Yeah, bridges are the key. I had two town watch, 2 light Auxillia and a half early legionary cohort beat 2 praetorian cohorts and 2 legionary cohorts.

Yup bridges are just the sort of battlefield u need . It holds em back and u shower volleys of arrows and when they charge into those spear points boy is it fun to watch . once i killed 4 saxon faction members with this tactic , my army of 340 wiped out theirs of 910 or sumthing .

I had a two wins like that. I was the Frankish and the Vandels attacked my city. I had like 220 men and they had about 5000.

Guys, all this bridge talk... I have had two bridge battles (I'm a newbie), the first the attacking army had to come across, the second it wasn't the case. Any way I can actually make sure that (if my army is positioned on a bridge on the strategic map of course) the attacking army has the bridge between it and me? Of course I could move my own men across the bridge after deployment, but I'd be vulnerable when crossing myself.

I have yet to suffer an attack on one of my cities.I always ensure i have a fair number of archers in there just in case.

welcome to the TEC forums! defending walls are quite easy. (stone wall) the enemy would take too many casualties before actually getting on the walls.

defending walls is not alway's easy when you haven't got enough troopers agfainst a horde of 5000 men and attacking from the four corners of your city and all having battery rams, ladders, siege towers, but still I managed to kill 4322 men of thiers with my 732 lol, most of my men where horsearchers not so good in a city

this remember me when i was fighting against hords as Alleman ... i had about 450 men and i was attacked by about 12 or 13,000 men hord... i think Vandals... anyway... i won, killing more then 6500 of them ... most of the work did my city towars, but i still had to fight against huge army. It was a goood game =)
