While I know little of which PC component affects which area of the game, I do know that Medieval 2: Total War runs on only 1 core, which means a dual-core or quad-core wont help you much in this regard.

My current CPU is a Intel quad-core q6600 2.4GHz. With that I can run about 4,500 troops in field battles (or so the game says when I play custom battles) but sieges tend to get bogged down. I also have noticed that battles in the campaign run smoother than custom battles.

GPU might also help with the lag, but mostly if you have max graphical settings (I have a nvidia gtx470, which is probably overkill for medieval 2, but I don't just play that), the amount of troops seems to be mostly affected by CPU speed.

So some questions arise when you are thinking about a new system:

How much money are you willing/ are able to spend on the new computer?

Are you going to play just medieval 2?

Also; you might be able to find a better answer in the medieval 2 technical issues forum, I think I saw some threads on this kind of stuff sitting around.

Another question is what is you're current PC. I know that their is somme softwares who boots you're PC for gaming, or perhaps your PC only needs a cleaning.

there is no point really. i have a quad core 5 760 with an amd 6970 and these older TW games like medieval 2 and rome lag but shogun 2 runs fine. it definitely is because of the problem that these older games are hardcoded to not use more than 1 core. this means that modern CPU's wont really as much as they should when running these games. some large battles will lag on my roma surrectum 2 mod. then ill hop over to battlefield 3 or battlefield bad company 2 with ultra settings and massive map destruction and no hiccups at all lol.
