    Default unit size

I finally have new computer and can enjoy RTR in its full beauty. I found out that even the huge unit size is not a problem anymore. I enjoyed seeing the huge ammount of men in the field for a while but then I realized that I could not anymore effectivly place my archers on the towers of the second tier barbarian wooden walls (respectively I could place them there but they do not fire), and I calmed down a little bit. Now, I am wavering between huge and large units size and could not decide on which I should start my new campaign.

I am therefore wondering which unit size use the other players and why? Thanks for replies

I always like to use the biggest units (therefore huge unit size) just because its the most realistic or nearest to historical reality because in a bigger battle you had of course not hundreds but thousands of troops. Of course you can't have a Cannae with 50 000 Carthaginians and 80 000 Romans on TW, but like 2500 against 4000 just gives a better impression than 650 against 1000 I think.

I always use large, but that's mainly because I'm used to it and therefore I don't like the feeling of bigger or smaller unit settings

I am also used to large and it is quite strange feeling for me with different unit size especially on campaign map when I lookinng if I should retrain my units or continue campaigning.

I suspect the game was originally made to run on large, but huge does make battles, well, bigger. So it's your call. I used to run on large, but started playing on huge after playing a few multiplayer battles on huge (though actually, multiplayers with large are better imo).

Maybe, the population growth rates were balanced on large.. also huge units are not so flexible on battlefield and you can find offten that only few man from your unit is actually fighting while rest is just standing out of melee facing to somwhere the flank.

It's just the impression I get (about RTW in general - I'm not talking about RTR here). With huge unit sizes, you have to be careful not to deplete settlements, and the units can be too big to fit on walls and in streets properly. Large units (which is the default iirc) fit the screen and the rest of the game much better.

In fact, the default is, logically, "normal". I play too with "large" units because I too like having more men on the battlefield, but indeed it's an issue with settlements' population, especially since I'm playing the Arvernes, who have small settlements (it's my first game, or rather my third or fourth attempt with the same faction, the previous ones having been interrupted by the non save-compatible patch, numerous CTDs, numerous CTDs again, and an abject defeat). On the other hand I'm not yet fully convinced that having a large population is really useful anyway.

Note : although this default can change depending on the game's assesment about your computer's capabilities, if I'm not mistaken.

I also have this impression. However, I started playing custom battles on huge, because than those huge battles looks really epic.

Since I played the game on more than one computer with very diferents specifics I can confirm that his is right. However, it seems that default is every time either normal or large, never huge or small.

Rtrvii is just too awkward on normal, esp with smaller cav size... Its more manageable at large... And better on huge...

Btw, but the dev knows which size the edu are balanced at... With 240 men per hoplite unit, its kind of hoplite-ish dominant

We tend to use large unit size as our base balancing setting.
