    Default How to get protectorates

Playing BI as the WRE on VH campaign difficulty, and I have the Franks down to their last settlement. I don't want to fight a horde, so I have been trying to get them to become a protectorate. They refuse every time, even though I have 2 full stack armies surrounding the city, which is defended by a few family members and levy spearmen. Any other ways I could "encourage" them to surrender?

Give them some reasonable terms like extra provinces and tons of denarii. IIRC losing your provinces to your protectorate is not a bad thing. Those will still count as yours so it won't set your victory conditions back and best of all, you get automatic military access anyways. Don't worry about being liberal with your treasury either because they eventually pay you back in tributes or something until they're bankrupt again.

Unfortunately, diplomacy in RTW isn't very good at all and the AI often doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I'm not sure how you'd go about reliably getting someone to be your protectorate by playing the game.

The only faction I've ever gotten to be a protectorate would be Dacia. I kid you not, I've played many games where I simply attack them (blockade their port or some such), they offer a cease-fire, I counter offer with protectorate, and they accept. Or even the direct way, I ask them to become a protectorate, and they agree.

I was once an Angel of Total War Heaven, but gave up my wings for a life on the sea of battle.

Portectorates are overated... Just destroy them all, if you are scared of a horde then get a couple of good assassains and finish them that way or corner the general's guards and destroy them.

What I would do here is just keep their last city under permanent siege. In other words, siege until there is just one turn left, then break the siege and re-siege. Rinse and repeat until you have enough stacks to defeat the hordes.

Actually the same tactics should make them accept the protectorate too sooner or later.

Siege till last turn (their last settlement ofc) - break the siege - try diplomacy - if they don't accept
    siege again and so on.

If you become a protectorate it means that you basically have an ally that won't do anything against you but you can still attack it I think.

No obligations other than giving him millitary access?

your masters take a ton off your payroll and if you don't break the alliance before your game is finished they might end up defeating you instead. though due to the stupid AI they usually end up breaking it for you especially if they have nothing better to do.

I can't prove they dock your finances but i swear it's happened to me before.

    Far as I know.

Well I sieged the city for 7 turns, broke the siege, then sieged them again for another 7 turns and they still would not surrender, so I just exterminated the city and then destroyed the horde. Probably what I should have done from the beginning, just was too lazy to fight 6 stacks in a row. You would think they would realize that surrender is better than getting wiped out. Well maybe this will teach the other barbarians a lesson.

I my self hate to actually kill the other factions, i see it interesting to see how they fight between each other or what will thye do next. therefore i like to make them my protectorates.

i have leared (by myself) that to someone become your protectorate u need (its not mandatory but it helps) that the faction u are asking to become your protectorate is in war with someone else (so he feels he needs protection) and has no allies ( so he feels he has no help from no one else).

money will also help them to become your protectorate-

i also saw that a cheat can be apply (but u dont recomend doing cheats, game is alredy too easy) that is open 'chat' (pressing: \ left of 1) and typing force_diplomacy accept. but i never was actually able to do so, does someone know how to aply this cheat? or if am doing it correctly

    thx

That cheat was disabled in a patch. In short, it won't work.

However, this is how you can do it:

These instructions are for vanilla RTW. If you are trying to add this to another mod, you may need to add in the advice thread and the trigger from step 1.

You need to modify two files...

    data/export_descr_advice.txt
    data/text/export_advice.txt

    ...and add one.

    data/scripts/show_me/Force_Diplomacy.txt

    1. data/export_descr_advice.txt

Replace the existing Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Thread with this:
    Code:
    ;------------------------------------------
    AdviceThread Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Thread
        GameArea Campaign

        Item Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Text_01
            Suppressible n
            Uninhibitable
            Verbosity 0
            Threshold 1
            Attitude Normal
            Presentation Default

            Text Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Text_01_Text1
Replace the existing 2085B_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Help_Trigger trigger with this:
    Code:
    ;------------------------------------------
    Trigger 2085B_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Help_Trigger
        WhenToTest ScrollAdviceRequested

        Condition ScrollAdviceRequested diplomacy_scroll

        AdviceThread Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Thread 0
    2. data/text/export_advice.txt (optional)

Replace the existing Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice entries with these:
    Code:
    ¬-------------------

    {Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Text_01_Title}	Force Diplomacy

    {Help_UI_Panel_Diplomacy_Early_Advice_Text_01_Text1}
You can force this faction to accept your offer by clicking on the "show me how" button.
    3. data/scripts/show_me/Force_Diplomacy.txt

    Here's the script itself:
    Code:

    	suspend_unscripted_advice true

    	console_command force_diplomacy accept

    	while I_CompareCounter loop = 0
