(This may seem a little random but it has been driving me mad)

Okay, ten years ago I read a book in sixth grade that was set in the future. I can't remember much about the book but what I do remember involved something along the lines of kid geniuses being used for futuristic warfare, where the kids (might have been teenagers or young adults, I REALLY can't remember). In any case, they were used in war games through computers, directing troops and such, if I remember correctly, and I believe at the very end they found out that what they were doing wasn't war games and they were actually sending real soldiers to war through the simulation.

I know it isn't much to go on, and I wish I could remember more specific details, but it has been driving me insane for several weeks. I have tried googling it but I can't find anything.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and can tell me what it is?

    It's Ender's game.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Ender is brought to the simulator, with several IF commanders watching, and told by Mazer this is his final test. As the simulation starts, Ender finds his human fleet far-outnumbered by the Formic forces above a planet. Despite being told that it was against the rules, Ender sacrifices many of his fleet to launch a Molecular Disruption Device at the planet, destroying the planet and the entire Formic fleet. Though Ender had anticipated that breaking the rules would mean he would be expelled from school, he discovers the IF commanders celebrating. Mazer returns, and informs Ender that this was not a simulation, but the actual Earth and Formic fleets at the Formic homeworld: Ender has just sacrificed an entire IF fleet and committed xenocide of the Formics, ending the war.

Well if its not Enders it could be a sequel to Enders. Honestly it sounds like enders to me too.

Okay upon reading the synopsis again it does sound rather similar to what I am saying. But, unless my memory is betraying me, which it rarely does when it comes to comparisons, the wars/battles occur on Earth, not in space.

Maybe it's Ender's Shadow then. Maybe the chronology of the series can help you trace it.

...Oh god I had no idea the series was so huge.

I'll have to check that out later. Maybe it is one of those...
