Default Weird Things in Battle Map

I can live with the changes (upgraded from RTW) but this game seems screwed... I attack a city with 3 generals, a unit of hobilars, 3 units of levy (??) spearmen, and a peasant archer and first of 2 of my units of spearmen go down but about 15-30 a piece fighting one unit of the exact same and then one gets annilathed against a second unit of spearmen, then I flank with 2 of my generals, move the other behind with my hobilars, and then when they are engaged send in the generals and hobilars to finish off the fight like I would in RTW but instead my army gets destroyed, I lose all three generals, and the enemy still has most of the units they started with minus, 2 spearmen, a bit of generals guard, and that's about all.
The thing that gets me is that I was playing on E/E as I always do for a new campaign in a new game, and atleast in the game I am used to (RTW) the general's guards should of been enough to WTF PWN most of the other army alone... Also, this battle was England (Me) VS Scotland.

Sounds like the enemy had better units than yours, and you lost because of that.

Early period and I check all of their units, the generals might of been better quality but overall the units they had were on par.

Sounds like your are used to cavalry in Rome. In Medieval 2, a cavalry units charge is drastically reduced from Rome. In Rome, a unit of cavalry could plough through ten ranks of guys before they come to a halt. In M2TW, you are lucky if your cav. can get through two lines of infantry.

And if you are used to RTW you will be shocked by the differences of the cav. You need to learn and understand they are slower, they take longer to rest up, and charges are less effective. Once you understand how you can use the full potential of your cavalry you dominate field battles.

Well I can tell you that if the AI was doing a holding action with the spearmen that would account for the rapid demise of your spearmen. The levy spearmen are light infantry and if you place them to "hold" a position their defense modifiers go up since that is how they are suppose to respond IE. stop a calvary charge. So your spearman attack them they "hold" your spearman are cut down.

Hobilars are only going to be good at attacking from directly behind or after the enemy breaks and flees. It is roughly the same with General's Bodyguard especially England as it tells you their Heavy Cavalry isn't up to snuff when you choose the faction under weakness.

Your best bet would have you place your archers to the left of your formation and fired arrows till none left then used them as either a decoy to draw out the General's bodyguard of the enemy where you could go toe to toe or use them to attack a flank, yeah you lose alot but hey it's peasant archers not real people

It seems to me that faction leaders are ALOT stronger in battle than they were in RTW. Only yesterday did i witness the Irish King, in a final stand, kill almost 20 of my levy spearmen on his own before he went down. I know how you feel

I was playing Medieval 1 a few days ago, I was playing as Spain, and attack the Arrogonese. I cornered their king, and he killed or routed seven units of my guys. I eventually got him though. I brought up some archers and filled him full of arrows! But still, that was humiliating, one guy routing over half of my army!

Medieval 1 was notorious for having those dreaded "Jedi" Generals, and that is the best way to deal with those, pincushion them.I would hate to see the reaction of someone that started with RTW play the original MTW. Anyone remember those 3 and 4 hour battles with stack after stack of reinforcements?

RTW was my first total war game.

Medieval II is more realistic than RTW because of the upper post regarding cavalry (trustno1(2)). You get used to it.

I note that you are attacking a city with cavalry. You will also find that cavalry have to be used with discrection in sieges - they often do not form up for a charge because of insufficient space. For cavalry to be effective you should hear the horn sound and see the words "charging" when you move your mouse over them (plus they lower their lances if they have any). If they have to change formation while moving to attack the enemy they will move into contact but won't charge. In small towns/castles cavalry are of limited use, as if they pursue they often get pulled into the central plaza and massacred there. Also, charging spearmen in the rear with cavalry requires a proper cavalry charge for it to work unless they are in really bad condition.
