Roman Era
Actually there are not a lot of really good movies about ancient Rome in my opinion. I can always find some fault with "Hollywood History" but with movies about ancient Rome it's the worst. There are a few entertaining one's though, but it's in (mini) series that ancient Rome comes of best:
- Rome (series by BBC and HBO)
- Ancient Rome, Rise and Fall of an Empire (series by the BBC, 5 or 6 episodes, must see)
- Centurion (2010, movie)
- I Claudius (series, BBC)
- The Eagle
Nice try but...:
- most Spartacus movies
- Atilla the Hun mini-series (Don't expect a true representation of the Late Roman Empire)
- The Druids (for one, I can't stand the lisping "I should actually play the badguy" way of speaking of Christopher Lambert and the Roman uniforms were no doubt hand-me downs from the French Asterix movies. The Gauls looked quite acceptable...)
- King Arthur (2004 movie)
For laughs:
- All Asterix movies, especially the animated ones.
Medieval Times
- Ironclad (2011, movie)
- The Borgias (2011, series)
- Arn, Knight Templar/The Kingdom at Roads end (Swedish mini-series of 2 movies)
- Robin of Sherwood (1984-1986 series)
- Kingdom of Heaven (though the producers thought the real history not exiting enough and changed some bits)
if you can bite through absurd and toe-curling declarations of Russian Patriotism: the most recent Taras Bulba movie because the fight scenes look rad and the costumes and weapons are bad ass...
Early Modern
- The last of the Mohicans
- Sharpe series (with Sean Bean)
- The Battle of Waterloo
- Hornblower series

Gladiator and the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven are a must see even if you are not really interested in history.
