I have a quick theory that I'd like to throw out there, because I've always been curious about this.
Are longboats/dragonboats more effective on the attack, and less effective than their cog/holk counterparts? Here's my reasoning:
Longboats and Cogs each have the same "numbers" at play, just swapped.
Longboats:
Soldiers: 25
Attack: 8
Charge: 1
Defense: 5
Cogs:
Soldiers: 25
Attack: 5
Charge: 1
Defense: 5
And the same with respect to Dragonboats and Holks. Anyway, what I'm wondering is: do boats only get the charge bonus on the attack? Because in that case, on the attack, it would be effectively:
Longboats:
Attack: 9
Defense: 5
vs.
Cogs
Attack: 5
Defense: 8
Which seems to tip the advantage solidly in the longboats' favor. On the other hand, on the defense, it goes:
Cogs:
Attack: 6
Defense: 8
Longboats:
Attack: 8
Defense: 5
I've never gotten to test longboats out, really, so I'm just curious about them. The numbers could just be averaged out, and they've only been switched for flavor. If that's the case, I'd suggest removing those units in favor of some land-based units!
