    Default Viking Longboats

I have a quick theory that I'd like to throw out there, because I've always been curious about this.

Are longboats/dragonboats more effective on the attack, and less effective than their cog/holk counterparts? Here's my reasoning:

Longboats and Cogs each have the same "numbers" at play, just swapped.

    Longboats:
    Soldiers: 25
    Attack: 8
    Charge: 1
    Defense: 5

    Cogs:
    Soldiers: 25
    Attack: 5
    Charge: 1
    Defense: 5

And the same with respect to Dragonboats and Holks. Anyway, what I'm wondering is: do boats only get the charge bonus on the attack? Because in that case, on the attack, it would be effectively:

    Longboats:
    Attack: 9
    Defense: 5

    vs.

    Cogs
    Attack: 5
    Defense: 8

Which seems to tip the advantage solidly in the longboats' favor. On the other hand, on the defense, it goes:

    Cogs:
    Attack: 6
    Defense: 8

    Longboats:
    Attack: 8
    Defense: 5

I've never gotten to test longboats out, really, so I'm just curious about them. The numbers could just be averaged out, and they've only been switched for flavor. If that's the case, I'd suggest removing those units in favor of some land-based units!

As far as I know the charge should have about 0 impact how it is currently set. Attack and defense are the most important of the unit stats but overall numbers, XP, and the admiral skill level also play a huge role.

You can change the 1 charge to a higher number if you want and play with them but it would probably have to be fairly extreme number to see much difference since all those numbers are abstracted in auto calcs anyway.

The most important thing with ships is that the fleet leading the attack is the main numbers used for the auto calc so if you have a single 3 XP longboat with a 2 star admiral- its better to use him to initiate attack than your newer fleet of 3 gun holks with better stats if the holks come into the battle as reinforcements. Your longboat might take heavy casualties but probably less than the holks by themselves would have. Then just send to longboat to harbor, build another gun hold and then disband the longboat. You will lose the XP but the admiral should transfer to the new ships.

You don't have a theory, you have a hypothesis.

Actually, you didn't even seem to have that. You just had a question.

Good point. Almost got away with murder, there.

Thanks Ichon, that's good advice on how the autocalc works. Seems like Longboats are just for flavor after all! It's too bad we can't let them sail downriver.

edit : then again, that would just get crazy since longboats can carry upwards of 1,000 men in this game

Murphy: There are varying degrees of evil, we urge you lesser forms of filth not to push the bounds and cross over, into true corruption, into our domain.
Connor: For if you do, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three. And on that day, you will reap it.
Murphy: And we will send you to whatever god you wish.
