Default In the event that a Catholic Republican takes office in 08

This thread is about what would happen if a Catholic Republican takes office in 08, as highly unlikely as that sounds. I think that if it happens, we are looking at an ultra big crackdown on everything that is being debated about that has religious overtones. Stem Cell research banned, abortion outlawed in all cases, except possibly as a way to save the mothers life, and even then maybe not that, and also several other laws made to favor Catholics and discriminate against protestants and members of other religions, Islam in particular because of the war on terror.

Why do you assume it'd be a catholic to go psycho on all those things? Protestants are the ones who are usually the worst ones with damning everyone and thinking they're doing god's work. Besides, what catholics are there that would run? Giuliani? He's pretty moderate, too much so to be a republican actually.

I can only pray that a Catholic Republican takes office.

You really can't generalize the view of 65 million American Catholics, many of which continually support the Democrats. It may surprise you to learn that most American Catholics (to the annoyance of Rome) are liberal and tend to vote witht the Democratic ticket.

That said, I would definately like to see many of the positive social reforms you mentions implemented. A fundamentalist Catholic Republican President could do wonders for this country in the same fashion that George Bush has done.

Thats not gonna happen, unless the democrat candidate dies right before the election. This term has really shown what it means to have such a conservative president, and America isnt so stupid to make that mistake a 3rd time in a row. I see this as very, very farfetched.

Sadly I have to disagree, America is that stupid. Thump a bible and hate gays and you got the majority of the American vote. It doesnt matter what you really stand for, it's that pathetic I'm afraid. The Government in general keeps us fat and happy, obsessed with NASCAR and American Idol, we've become so damn ignorant and docile it's frightening.

Religous zealotry and conviction are virtues that are sadly missing in other western nations(cough*Europe*cough). Only the uninformed are ingnorant, and America certainly has it's proportionate share.

I think he's emulating my usual routine and pulling our chains. Why else would Atheist Peace defend a war fought on the basis of the religous zealotry of the 11th-13th century's. Or maybe he's finally converted.

Thank You Pope. I was wondering how many people would respond before SOMEONE would realise how uproariously sarcastic AP was being.

On topic - I dont think having a hugely catholic pres would do anything to seriously alter the course of the country.

Speak for yourself please, if you want to group yourself in that generalization go right ahead but dont drag the rest of us Americans in on it too.

My opinion is based merely on what I see each and every day, all you need do is read a newspaper or turn on the tv.

Which doesnt represent a country of nearly 300 million people, it is a generalization and an ignorant one which is ironic considering the basis of your opinion is that majority of Americans are ignorant so its almost self fulfilling one Regardless you are aware the media, newspapers and tv focus on what they deem is news worthy stories which often revolve around the stupidity of *some* people who make that news, something of which the 'average' american doesnt create so you are getting a distorted view if you are basing your opinion on whats on tv. If however you are somehow surrounded by ignorant, stupid people irl then Im sorry that you are but dont insult the rest of us by grouping us into that. And Im sorry if my post is harsh but basicall you are calling alot of us stupid so

    Which catholic exactly?
Besides, as soon as a catholic would make an anti abortion move everyone would yell how the pope (naziomglol) is controlling him.

With all that spending he's been doing, he's not conservative. And with the stem cells and gay marriage, he was just being a politician.

Well, you shouldn't paint all Catholics that colour. I'm Catholic and I don't discriminate based on race or religion, I may disagree with a religion's ideals but I don't discriminate. I think science is a way to free humanity, break the limits that we set, go the distance. That is what science is to me. You are being the discriminating one here by claiming all Catholics are like that. I also find that Protestants are the more fanatical of the two denominations. What with the fundies and the evangels. Those are both primarily Protestant movements.

Edit: And G.W Bush's ideals may be conservative but his spending surely isn't. His spends a lot of money for very little social or scientific change at a time. Not a very good system if you ask me.

But most catholic politicians are very conservative and do descriminate. They may not represent catholics but they still are catholic.

okay, how bout if someone who takes Pat Robertson seriously gets elected? If not Pat Robertson himself, he ran for president back in the 80s, though the first Bush won that one.

He isn't catholic, and the Pope would probably have him personally executed if the rest of America didn't do it first. That is one of the most hated men in America.

If George Bush can't do any of the things listed in the first post, then why in the great green world would a catholic magically be able to?
