Simple way:
1) Write down the name of the in-game character you want to change. (Take the very simple example "Shimazu")
2) Find that name in the "Localised String" column of the 'names.loc' file. You can click on the area that contains the word "Localised String" to sort the column from A-Z, making it easier to find what word you want to change. (Find Shimazu!)
3) Change that name to what ever you want to show up. (Change "Shimazu" to... "Satsuma").
4) Save your custom pack file, boot the game, view the new name.

Thanks for the quick reply. Appologies for not being online lately. It's carnival season over here so lots of girls/women and alcohol.
Lets say I don't want to change an ingame character. Just add new names so I can, lets say when a general has just been recruited, I can change his name from takayama shigehide to Mori Ranmaru. without having to mess with the actual vanilla files.
Hi Anton, how do you get to "names.loc"? Is this data.pack>db>names_tables>names? Only thing is there isn't a column called "Localised String" there.
local_en_patch.pack > text > db > names.loc
I'm not all that familiar with the non-english setup, if that's relevant to you.

Thanks Anton!
OK so you can also change clan names in text>db>factions.loc but how do you change the family and given name of the daimyo linked to that clan?

Yeah it's pretty frustrating. Apart from the playable/major clans the minor clans just seem to be generic in that names.loc table with no indication of what is surname or forename and both vanilla and Rise of the Samurai seem to be mixed together![]()
