    Default Maple Leaf Terror...

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5044560.stm

Canada arrests 17 in terror raid
Police said the suspects planned "al-Qaeda-inspired" attacks
Police in Canada have arrested and charged 12 men who they say were planning an "al-Qaeda-inspired" bombing campaign in and around Toronto.

Five other youths have also been charged, following an investigation involving more than 400 officers.
Hats off to the candian law enforcement. They were able to thwart a potentially dangerous attack.

Who would have expected something like this in Canada? Well done to them for finding out, its the last place I'd look for terrorists.

Didn't surprise me at all. Several terrorists have actually come through Canada to the U.S. including the "Millenium Bomber" who was caught. I'm not saying that Canada was/is a main vector for terrorists coming into the U.S., just that there have been some incidents before this. Canada is an open society--like the U.S. and most other Western nations As such it is vulnerable as well.

I'm glad that they were able to stop this one.

Canada is one of the MAJOR rout of terrorists trying to get into US. It's due to geographical proximity, border security, generous welfare and refuge laws Canada provides. US increased border security procedure on US-Canada border for a reason.

Thats unexpected for terrorists to bomb Canada, but it's still a bit creepy that these terrrorists are planning terrorists attacks all over the world. It just makes you think what country will be next

More proof that Islamic terrorists are willing to attack any western nation...even Canada. They don't care if they are involved in Iraq or not, they hate us all the same.

SOME western nations. The threat of terrorism is almost (if any) non-existent in here, for example (whereas our neighbour Australia is not faring so well).

We also have a muslim army officer which made peace-keeping operation in Afghanistan much smoother.

Nope, all Western nations are a target. You are only kidding yourself if you think remaining passive prevents you from being a target. These clowns hate the culture itself.

The attacks were planned for Southern Ontario, most likely Toronto...

I'm not saying I'm so anti-American that I think you should be completely isolated or anything, I'm just saying that in this one case, Canada was watching out for itself...

BRAMPTON, Ontario - Some of the 17 Muslim men accused of plotting terror bombings in Canada also planned to storm Parliament, take hostages and behead the prime minister and other leaders, according to accusations revealed Tuesday by the lawyer for one of the suspects.Source
Seems like they were after the Prime Minister's head. Ouch!

I drove past the station they kept the suspects today. Nothing was going on today, but apparently when they were arrested there were guards standing every 3 feet around the perimeter. A little unnecessary, but it's a show of force.

Its good to know that things like this are caught. They were using fertalizer, which I can see being easily attainable without being noticed.

Interesting fact I learned today about one of the men arrested. He worked at the same golf course as a friend of mine up near Stouffville. Although it wasn't his job there he spent lots of time rummaging through the compost and fertilizer sheds/areas on the course. So he obviously had plans on obtaining the ammonium nitrate one way or another. Thankfully they decided to try and buy it from the RCMP/CSIS sting instead of stealing it from the golf course.

No. The probability of terrorist hijacking a commercial airplane and crashing into Skytower in Auckland is pretty slim.
Terrorists aim for targets of strategic and symbolic importance for maximu effects. That's far away from being indiscrimantly. London bombing was very deliberate and discrimate use of terrorism-maximum civilian casualty. It's nigh impossible to say that because terrorist bombed a busy London train and because one NZer died in a train bombing we're suddenly in danger.
No. Terrorists will be more likely to target US or Australia than NZ or Germany. No, terrorists do not indiscrimately bomb some random nations just because they're foreign or western. For example, It's hard for me to imagine IRA targetting French or Germans just because they're foreign.
So could you explain the signifgance of Canada? Could you tell me what they did differently than NZ? I'm going to have to agree with red harvest here. I think NZ would be a legitimate target for terriorists. At least as much as Canada is/was.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. This is obviously not true of the suspected Canada bomb plotters. However, as far as Israel is concerned, the resistance say their land was taken forcefully, their homes buldozed and their families made to live as refugees. You can't really refute this. I don't agree with all the tactics of Hezbollah and Hamas since I'm a secularist but I recognize their right to exist in the face of the invasion of their country.
