First VH/VH campaign advice

I've had the game for about a year now and never played a higher level than M/M. That's gotten rather boring so I'm wanting to try something a bit more challenging. I've got Vanilla completely unmodded, all factions unlocked except the ones that you have to mod to get (i.e. Thrace, Dacia). So what do I need to know? What faction should I play?

hmm. i'd start with greece. they get a

ton of gold off of ports (same deal with macedon), and the ai reeeeaaaaaaally doesnt know how to go up against pikes. Greece is arguably the easiest faction to play as in the game. Just battlemap things, and you should be fine. take the islands first. they're near impossible to lose so long as they're defended by pikes. and take out macedon ASAP (or greece, if you're playing as macedon). pikes lose their advantage against other pikes. but you probably know that by now

avoid playing as barbarians until later, they're a pain early game. and avoid the desert factions unless you want to fight horse archers. avoid field battles unless you're garunteed to win. Work on your military AFTER you're an economic monster. but that may be just my own approach.

I dont have Macedon unlocked. I'd like to but don't know how to access Steam properties and mod it in.

This is the file path for steam:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Gold\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\descr_strat.txt

Just cut and paste all the factions into 'playable', minus the slave (rebels) and senate.

Make sure you give Macedon a go, they've got a fun campaign too.

Are you aware that VH campaign is easier to play than H campaign?

Apparently, the additional bonuses that the AI is supposed to get on VH don't happen.

So the hardest campaign difficulty is H and not VH.
