Default question on recruitment of free slaves

Greetings EB warriors, have a question on a certain recruitment barracks. Militia Armory for Foreign Natives shows recruitment for "free slaves (rebellion only 2)" What does that mean? Also I have been playing as Carthage for about 75 turns and I noticed there are no missions? Just curious, really doesnt bother me.

You can never directly recruit the slaves. What I *think* the "(Rebellion Only X)" signifies is that when you gain the city via rebellion, that's how many Freed Slaves units you get. Never having had that happen, though, I'm not sure.

As for missions, no, there aren't any.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

Also slaves appear if you receive a settlement in a diplomatic exchange.

The number next to the slaves is the amount given in such conditions.

Building auxiliary barracks in regions with only slave regionals is more of a benefit to your enemies than yourself.

Primarily this was implemented to encourage the Ai to build high level barracks, even if an intermediate construction step offers no new units.

OK I understand now. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't recruit them(not much good any way except in a REBELLION) Thanks everyone for helping me out. Off to kill more Roman dogs!

Free slaves are actually very powerful missile units if they have silver chevrons. I use them to maul enemy infantry, heavy cavalry, and even elephants.

Not really. I mean, yeah, they're sort of powerful in that they have an AP Ranged attack, but it's only 1 base Attack, with a Range of 30, and 8 Ammo. Apeleutheroi have 1 Armour, 4 Skill, come in size 50 (base), and cost 350 Upkeep. On the other hand, you have Slingers. The worst slingers in the game (AFAIK) are the Roman Accensi, with 1 Attack (AP), a range of 133.2, and 25 Ammo. They have 1 Armour, 6 Skill, come in Size 30 (base), and cost 84 Upkeep.

Give either one +6 XP and they've got a Ranged AP Attack of 7, which will chew through quite a bit. The difference is that Accensi are recruitable (and therefore replenishable), are cheaper, have better range, and have more ammo.

Exactly. And for the cost of one unit of Apeleutheroi, you can have four Accensi. Which is more than twice the amount of men. Also, Apeleutheroi are the slowest unit in the game. There really is no point to recruiting them (if you want to shift population, you're better off with Pantodapoi, who can at least fight a little bit), and they're not meant to be used actively (which explains the high upkeep cost).

Why are they the slowest? They may have terrible morale and week stats but you'd think that being speedy would be one advantage they would have.

    Will they return in EB2?

They're slow becasue they're weighed down with all the loot they took from their former masters.

    They are also likely malnourished.

They are not meant to be used by the player, the high upkeep, inferior stats and the (compared to other units) not-detailed skin are all 'hints' to disband them if one gets them after a rebellion. The CAi can't disband troops, and uses them as light infantry in battle.
If I was to get them in my campaigns I either disbanded them at once or settled them into a new province.
