Launching RS with Steam

I've done quite a bit of searching, but I can't seem to figure this out. It's a relatively inconsequential issue, but nonetheless, I'd like to solve it.

I like seeing how many hours I've spent playing each game on steam. When I play RS, using the launcher which is set to use Steam, I don't get the Steam overlay, and Steam doesn't track my time played.

Is there anyway to make those things happen?

Ok, so I figured out that if I copy the correct (i.e. what I see at the cmd prompt) launch parameters into the "Set Launch Options" dialog box, it seems to load steam and work as I want. Do I lose anything by not using the launcher? I know it's used to set various options, but once those are set, is it cool to just load via steam?
