Can't install/run Kingdoms

So I used to have the game installed through Steam, but after a past debacle, I decided to get a physical copy. I bought Gold edition and installed Medieval 2 with a little difficulty (It said Gold was already installed but I figured out a workaround), but I can't figure out Kingdoms, and the launcher still has all the options to run the Kingdoms campaigns/mods attached to it from the steam install, despite me removing steam. I tried running the second disc but it won't do anything.

What should I do?

Well crap...It won't let me play the game. It says "Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."

when you uninstalled did you clear the steam cache and run a registry cleaner?

How can I clear the steam cache?

Delete Both folders, starting with the one in Steamapps and the other in the Creative Assembly.

Okay well I managed to get the game to run, and even managed to install the Kingdoms (Britannia, at least)...I tried to modify the preferences and now the game won't let me run it, even when I changed the preferences back.


I'm starting to miss Steam....

I have no idea what emulation software or virtual drives are...

No torrents, don't know what ISOS are

Does anyone know off hand what Reg keys the Steam install of M2 adds? Maybe this needs to be nuked through the manual uninstall of Steam-specific Reg keys and a reinstall of the whole game....

that be fantastic to know....but alas i don't have a steam install to play with. If someone has this info, please pm me or post it here

The Steam version uses the normal M2TW Registry locations, i.e. "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SEGA\Medieval II Total War" (this is on Win7 64-bit; on 32-bit Windows the "WoW6432Node" part will be missing). This key should definitely be deleted if you switch between Steam to retail, as the old program path would still be present. For the Kingdoms entries there is also a "DistributionSource" subkey, set to "steam" here. This may matter, too. Well, just delete the whole M2TW subkey, that should solve the Registry-related problems.

@Gen. Chris: BTW what was the original problem with Steam, if I may ask? M2TW runs pretty well here... after replacing the launcher, that is.

Okay so I gave up doing this a month ago, but I'm back now. I reinstalled Medieval 2 but I can't do custom battles. It loads but then crashes.

I was able to get it to work, but now it won't (I exited and restarted the game just in case)

Depends on the custom battle Some battles are bugged. Some units are bugged.

Which version plays a part, too.

Well I uninstalled and I am attempting to reinstall now...But it's saying that everything is still installed even though it ISN'T.

My god, I am wishing I never tried to use Steam and just got the physical copy in the first place...I am getting so mad about this.
