Default What is this crap with grouped units?

Why does grouping units make it impossible to place them on the battle map where you want them? And why can't you change the order within your stack of units on the campaign map? Seem like basic bugs to me.

Also, is there anyway to tell where all your troops are going by holding down a modifier? I know shift shows you where the ones are going but only if you have them selected. As in, I want to put my archers directly behind my infantry but I can't tell where the infantry are going after I deselected them to select my archers.

In group you can keep the same formation and move them easily to a new position without reformating them. It doesn't prevent you from moving single units of the group into a new place. I agree that there should be a quick way to move units in campaign map. Only way is to select all archer units by a quick press (Cntr+A) and take them out of the stack and then remerge them. Btw, they are not mod related bugs.

edit. Oh in that case you did not already know you can modify the position of the units when giving them moving order but holding the right mouse button. Strange it took me so long to find it out but it made group moving so much easier!

Space bar is the key you are looking for.

    Nope, ctrl+a = select all units. Ctrl=m = all missile, ctlr+i = infantry, ctrl+c = cavalry. I dont remember artillery tho

R-TW was much much more user friendly about units placements. It is killing me in Med2. Placing(deploying) units -especially in settlement battles- jusy stupid !!! If you want to move a grouped units into somewhere inside the the settlement, it was too easy in R-TW. Even you were able to give them direction by holding right button easily. They get the most possible formation quickly. But Med2 doesn't allow you. You have to move all units one by one if you want to give them direction+formation by holding right button. The cavalaries resist to move even if you try them one by one. They are almost "disabled!" when deploying in a settlement especially if you are playing huge army scale. And you still suffer if you have open battle on a mountain/hill... The rocks become obstacle for doployment mostly.

Anyway, it is certain that they "went back" about unit deployment according to rome-tw. May be they just wanted to make it more realistic(bec. units can overlap too much at R-TW if you want) but it is just tiring the player now...

I've found that not using groups is working better for me. Basically when you first start the battle, "Group" the units you want together, then highlight the units in that group and drag them out of the group. That way they at least become next to each other in the unit selection window. I do this for archers, infantry, and cavalry. Then placing them where you want them in formation works when you select them all. It's just for some reason when they're grouped it doesn't let you click and drag where you want them.

Also, thank you for space bar. I think I used to know this but it has been years since I played mtw2.

Exactly, something that also bugs me with mtw in relation to rtw is wall placement and wall battles. With rome total war you were able to easily place units on city walls, and wall fights were more spectacular with units falling off (something that I really miss in mtw2). Battlefield manoeuvering was also easier in rtw. The reason I still prefer mtw 2 is merely because of the graphics and animations.
