I can see the legitimacy of both sides...and I can see the inevitably contrived and petulant response of both as well.

This is a cold war. We have assassinations, bombings, propaganda, exhibitions of military might and an utter obsession with media driven posturing.

But I honestly think we have come as near as is "comfortable" to this kicking off now...someone needs to climb down, and neither nation is known for their humility.

It is US foreign policy to promote "US Primacy". That is, to assure the rest of the developed world that they need not aspire to or persue greater independent power or influence because the United States can sufficiently cover for their needs.

Yes, the US has to run around doing all this work but they do that because they've convinced Western Europe that we don't need powerful armies, we don't need global influence, we don't need to act on our own accord to protect our interests, because the United States will make sure nothing bad happens to us. We can go spend our money on social programs and welfare states instead!

It's whether or not you agree with this or not that it boils down to. Sure its annoying that, when push comes to shove, it's the US Armed Forces that need to do the heavy lifting, but what you get in return is the rest of the developed world rarely questioning your foreign policy or acting without your nod of approval. Is it worth it, is the decision you must make.

I was countering the point made that America would have to clean up the mess as expected. I was merely pointing out that when a nation continually puts itself forward to clean up a mess, it becomes expected.
