    Default Any fiction on Sertorius?

Hello everyone. The EB NOM project has stirred interest in the late Republican era, particularly about Quintus Sertorius. I've heard that he was a basis for the character Maximus in Ridley Scott's Gladiator but other than that I can't find any fiction that would revolve around him.

Does anyone know of any fiction regarding Sertorius?

I did. There are books on him but they are historical, not fiction. I found Fawn of Sertorius that looked like fiction but after looking closely I saw that it wasn't. Amazon too doesn't give me any hits but then maybe the title doesn't have "Sertorius" in it. It just seems surprising because there is tons of fiction about Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, Spartacus, all from that time.

I doubt you'll find anything. Even the historical sources about him are very scarce unfortunatly...

If there isn't much on him, where did the EB team got their info for the preview? I know you guys have access to some pretty amazing info and to tell the truth I'm jealous.

The thing is I'm contemplating to write an alternative history story. I would begin with Spartacus actually coming to Sicily. Then I would include Sertorius who wasn't assassinated after all. I'm planning to take a few historically untrue facts and see what might have happened if things went that way instead the way they did. The way I see it, Pompey subdued Iberia, came to Italy to clean up what was left of Spartacus, went to fight Mithridates and Tigranes, put the Seleucids out of their misery. He was one busy chap. Change only a few facts and things might turn up a lot differently.

Well, we are the EBNOM team, not the EB team

I did most of the work for the Sertoriani (not the artwork). The main source is definetly Sertoriouses biography by Plutarch; if you can find the commentary by Konrad (or Conrad), even better.

There is also quite a lot on him in the works of Appian as well. I read a few ancient books about the era to try and get more info on him; but those books weren't about Sertorius in general, they were about the late republic.

If you need more info, go ahead and ask

Read the FAQ. Most likely real life sources.

If you can read Spanish, there is this book:

    http://www.amazon.es/Sertorio-genera...9423679&sr=8-1

Although I have never read anything from this author, so I cannot give you a trustworthy opinion.

Sadly, I don't. But thanks for the effort of finding something.

Sertorious pops up here and there in Steven Saylor's "Gordianus the Finder" mystery series, and particularly features in the short story "The White Fawn", published in the collection titled "A Gladiator Dies Only Once". I've never seen a novel about him, unfortunately.

The General Maximus of the movie "Gladiator" was inspired by the fictional protangonist of Wallace Breem's classic novel "The Eagle in the Snow".
