Default Is this really supposed to happen?

While conquering the world as the French, I've managed to piss off the very powerful Milanese people. While fighting off a siege they initiated to dwindle down their forces until I can stomp them with my massive horde of a army, the Milanese managed to decrease one of my forces down to two people: a spearman and my General.
Instead of crushing my last two men to a pulp, the Milanese decided to have a epic stare off with my spearman, causing me to win the siege due to time running out. Now, is this really supposed to happen?
Btw, I'm playing on the hardest difficulty, no mods.
What I'm talking about is here:

    To answer your question: No

A longer answer would be: the "AI" is notorious for it's stupidity, but that goes too far!

Have you installed all the patches?

I've installed all the patches, kind of strange. The Spearman must've had a honey badger mounted on top of his spear so no man would dare attack him.

The Milanese wouldn't dare attack him. They watched 300.

I've had AI freeze during sieges before, usually on top of walls. Vanilla AI can be inexplicably dumb like that.

Remove time limits. Makes using artillery more fun.

Also, during siege fights where the AI gets into the city, then gets beat weak, they will get stuck in a command loop and stand there waiting to be killed off. You'll know if you get into the loop, because they will constantly keep shouting orders and not move. Typical bad ai programing bug.

One thing that does puzzle me though is that if that screenshot is of the town square, then surely the Milanese would be considered to be in control of the city anyway. That would cause the victory timer to start for them, so they wouldnt actually have a need to finish off the last soldier.

Victory timer actually started for me once the invisible time limit was reached. (Didn't have no time limit on but the game decided to call it quits)

    I'm not sure Avatar, but the defender gains control of the city even if I have 1000 soldiers and he has only 1 in the city square;
For example , a few days ago I was playing with England on my SS campaign and I had some spear militia holding the town square (I was the attacker and I managed to reach the town square with some damaged spear militia units) when suddenly some crossbow leftovers that were near the square came in it and I lost control of the town square

I've certainly seen examples where the timer starts even when defenders are in the square fighting. It may be to do with the current morale status of the units, e.g. fighting to the death or routing and they don't count towards control.

Why didn´t you post it in the Screenshots thread?

As for OP, no that´s not supposed to happen.
Did you notice the enemy constantly shouting orders? Because then it would be as Hauptman T said; that they´re stuck in a "loop"
Also, on a sidenote, that´s obviously not in the Plaza - just a random street in the town, so the Milanese wouldn´t be in control.
You can gain control of a settlement and start the countdown if you have a certain amount more men than the defenders in the plaza - like 2 or 3 times more or something.

In fact (in vanilla, against the stupid AI) i have taken settlements without even a soldier from either sides getting hurt at all. I said getting hurt, not dieing. Meaning there wasn't even any physical contact. For example, 1 general defending a citadel against my army of 10 units. He sits at the plaza waiting. My troops get in and surround him in the plaza, but don't attack. They start the timer and in 3 minutes the citadel is mine. The AI general was overwhelmed and just stood and stared at them

For some weird reason, the background behind the hour glass started to lower until the background was dark. Then a timer started as if you was capturing the city, but instead, I won because a time limit was reached. This never happened to me before because I never waited this long before.

Oh, well, then you're talking about the battle time-limit. You can have it on or off. You had it on. I used to play with it off, so that i could take my time. But sometimes stuff (bugs lets say) can happen that make you wish you had the time limit on. Most people will advise you to always play with it on. And it gives plenty of time, anyway (don't know exactly how much..). But sometimes, like in the OP, it can lead to winning a battle when you shouldn't really have won

I mean, the odds were against you, and you should lose... IF the Milanese continued to attack you... But if they were just standing there... then the timer did them justice!

Why did the the French gift the Statue of Liberty to America? Because it didn't fit in their country, she only had one arm raised.

Something like that. I think it's more like if the attackers have 5 times more troops than the defenders.
