We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender - Sir Winston Churchill

Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade are both set during this era; although they are both great films, they are very similar plotwise (they have the same director). Please note they are both dramas, so there isn't much in the way of action in them.
Red Lion is another old but good film about this era. It stars Toshiro Mifune as a peasant who joins the newly founded Imperial Army as an idealist whose optimism is soon crushed by the realisation that the new Meiji regime won't make much difference to the lives of the ordinary peasant farmers. The film itself is played for laughs, and it's pretty much a comedy-drama.
Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Sanjuro also take place at the end of the Edo Period, although they don't directly involve the events of the war as much. In Yojimbo, one of the samurai uses a Western six-shooter pistol - but other than that, it doesn't really cover the battles of the period.
When the Last Sword is Drawn has already been mentioned. It's a good film, although it's pretty sentimental at times. It'a about a clash of personalities between two samurai who serve in the Shinsengumi, the Shogun's secret police corps. One of the most famous battles of the Boshin War, The battle of Toba-Fushimi is briefly depicted in the movie.
Shintaro Katsu's Zatoichi movies take place around the end of the Edo Period, as can been seen by the inclusion of six shooter pistols and breech loading rifles in some parts, although once again it doesn't directly involve the Boshin War.
Technically, The Last Samurai is based on the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, which was eight years after the Boshin war.
-Zatoichi and Yojimbo movies, these guys have their own movies but there are also some crossovers. Zatoichi is basically about a monk who fights samurais and bandits. Yojimbo is about a lone ex-samurai who has become something of a bounty hunter and must rid a town of the corrupt officials and criminal organizations by infiltrating them, becoming one of them and then tricking them in a bid to get them all to kill each other.
-The anime Rurouni Kenshin and its film counterpart Samurai X Trust and Betrayal
-The 13 assassins
can't remember anything else at this moment, but it will come to me.
Hello. Try to find Akira Korosawa's RAN. Its tryully epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbbfDntoRRk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ran_(film)
But Ran is not a Boshin era film it is a Sengoku Jidai film. But on that note if you also want Sengoku Jidai films then be sure to check out Kagemusha and Seven Samurai as well, the Hidden Fortress is also another good movie (this is actually what Star Wars is based off).
Well i saw last time a Japanese Serie thats playing around the Boshin war but on the end from it till the Russian - Japanese War to 1905 or so
