Default French Napoleonic Marines in land combat

    Gentlemen,
I have a question that I hope someone on the site can answer. I have an interest in Marines of the Napoleonic era, but very little knowledge in that area. In fact before NTW I had almost no interest or knowledge of this era of history. Although I have more than 200 books on history, but I have only one book on the Napoleonic period. So I am learning.

So to the question, does anyone know if French Marines were in any significant combat on land between 1799 and 1815? I would expect Egypt but I don’t know.

Here is what I know about French Marines. The French Marines were established in 1622 by Cardinal Richelieu as the Regiment de la Marine, later called the Fusiliers Marins (Naval Fusiliers). It would appear that French Marines served as naval infantry in virtually all of the French colonies where military force was necessary, that makes sense because they were a combat ready force trained in infantry tactics with special marksmanship skills who were already aboard the only transportation method of the day. They also performed their duties as snipers and the captains’ personal guard and police aboard ship. The best way in navies of the day to protect the captain and stop a mutiny was to call up Marines. I know they were disbanded in 1825 and reactivated in the 1850's.

At various points in history they have been called by many names; these names include,
Infanterie de la marine (prior to theAmerican Revolutionary war), the Royal-Vaisseaux (that means vessels apparently), the La Couronne created in 1643, the Royal-Marine regiment established in 1669, Troupes colonials, and the Troupes de marine as they are known today. Under the monarchy they saw combat in the Americas and I know that an unnamed French Marine sniper was credited with killing Nelson at Trafalgar. Sorry chaps, but that is one of the jobs of any shipboard Marine. Modders should factor extra marksmanship for Marines in my opinion since that was a requirement of Marines in all Navies.

I am open to any new info, but I am particularly interested in the French Marines during the Napoleonic era involved in land combat.
