    Default many CTDs

    Hi all,

i know that CTDs are somewhat common at the best of times but they seem to of intensified in recent days, 50% of the battles i fight will either CTD before i finish deployment or just as im finishing the fight (often causing extreme irritation as you can imagen), the campaign map seems stable but the battles are not, forcing me to auto resolve quite a few battles and as im playing FGE, causing me many more losses than i need to take.

    any ideas?

If your computer has an activity light (usually next to the power button on it) try to wait until it stops flickering alot, or if your tower makes a louder noise than usual (it's thinking!) or just wait about 30 seconds when you get to the stats screen at end of battle (meanwhile still on the battle screen) then click done. It's helped me actually. If that doesn't help, I am sure someone more tech or roma surrectum savvy on here can help!

Moved to tech help. Have you changed the graphics settings at all? If so, lower them and try again.

This is not a real common problem.....except in cases where Unit Shaders are not checked in options to turn them on, OR, in cases where you've played for a long time and RTW has sucked up all you PC's memory, OR, in cases where your video card is overheating or unstable for various reasons (somewhat 'iffy drivers', under-powered, made by Nvidia and you have not rebooted in a while, the fan heat sink is dirty or clogged with dust, the fan is inoperative [more common than people may think], or the Processor fan and heatsink are dirty and not working.)

Also, heavily fragmented hard drives can cause trouble because the Windows 'indexes' can get scrambled, and parts thereof lost to the OS, thus causing issues for any applications that access the drive. If you have over 2GB of RAM in you PC and use WindowsXP, you'll also have a known issue with RTW where it 'loses track' of memory because the OS is having issues with that as well.

Also, Anti-Virus programs can cause trouble for games....ESPECIALLY anything made by Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus)...which will cause RTW to cough, drag, lag, hiccup and crash because it thinks it has to scan everything anything does on your PC.

I'm having a similar or even the same issue:

When I fight lare battles that last a long time, the game crashes. Most notably this happened on the opening battle of the Roman campaign against Hannibal. I had to replay the battle 5 times until I finally got to the Battle Report screen, on all the other occasions RTW just crashed on the middle of battle. I have my graphics lowered, it's always running fine before it crashes, no lag whatsoever.
You mentioned something about RTW eating up all my computers memory, I think that could be the issue, since this battle always takes a long time to fight. I've already tried giving RTW a higher priority, but that didn't increase the total time until the crash notably, so I can't be sure wether that's the issue...

    Any ideas?
If you think it is the memory eating issue, then how could I fix that (without buying more RAM, I already have 4GB and I read somewhere that RTW can only handle up to 2GB at a time, so I don't think that would help...)

EDIT: I'm using RTW-ALX, fully patched, no steam, installed to D:\Games\Rome - Total War\etc. etc.
