    Banners Size Mod



    Hello everyone,

    We will all agree that the artistic team of TATW did an awesome job, and yet during battles we cannot fully enjoy this job because there is no unit banners as we are used to it in every TW game.

    This choice of the TATW devs has been often criticized and when we play one of the evil factions often dressed in black with huge units (Yes Mordor, I speak of you !), the melee gets quickly chaotic.

    I looked for any solution to this but I did not find any, so I started to mess around with the mod files to find a solution.

    This very light mod allows you to play with big units banners as you had them in Med II Vanilla.

    Installation :

    1 - First, create a folder on your desktop named after "Vanilla TATW files".

    2 - Go to Program Files (x86)/Sega/Medieval II Total War/mods/Third_Age_3. Cut TATW.cfg and paste it to the folder you just created.

    3 - Paste TATW.cfg of the mod instead, then right click - Properties and check "Read Only".

    4 - Then go to the folder Data inside Third_Age_3, cut the file "descr_banners_new.xml" and paste it to the created folder.

    5 - Paste "descr_banners_new.xml" of the mod instead.

    Done ! Launch the game, start a quick battle and you should see the big units banners over your units.

    If you want to play the game with no banners again, take the vanilla files you put inside the folder we created and put them where they came from, replace the mod files.

    IMPORTANT : I have no opportunity to play it online so I don't know if it works during online battles but I guess it does. If anyone can try this out, please let me know.

    NOTE : This mod doesn't work with sub-mods adding new factions.

    IIRC no other submods touch the banner part- at least not the main ones.
    So feel free to use it.
    Also you can backup always

    Indeed, it should work with any other sub-mod as far as I know.

    This won't be compatible with a mod adding new faction, as that requires to edit descr_banners_new.xml

    I don't understand: Why don't you just put 'show_banners = 0' to '= 1' in TATW.cfg file?
    Playing Silvan I don't need more. Maybe bigger banners are needed for Mordor as you said.

    Bug Report - Game crash when entering Battle.

    When I have Spiders in a Battle, the game will crash if I am using those .cfg/.xml settings/files contained in this mod. I assume that's because the Spider unit either doesn't have a banner or has something strange being done with its banner attribute. The fix is just to change the settings in the appropriate files or paste the old, saved, files back over them, which effectively does the same thing.

    I do not know if this happens for other units, but I would assume it would. Most of the playtesting was probably done with the standard LoTR banners, so other heavily customized units might have that same problem.

    PS - But, thanks for the mod! I've just only started playing this mod and your unit banners really helped get myself oriented when playing Mordor. I'm sure it'll help with others, as well. Now, I've learned how to handle the darker units a bit better, but it still gets very confusing with the small unit banners native in the vanilla mod.

    Thanks for this report. I did many many battles with the mod and never encountered a crash but I never used the spiders since I'm not a fan of this creature, so this may be the only unit encoutering this problem. Not sure though.
    By the way I use the vanilla banners of the mod, don't know about mods modifying them but I don't recommend to use the mod with modded banners, just in case, people need to back up their old files before to replace them with mines for more safety.

    Hey man awsome mod i was hoping something like this would come out since release of 3.0. Would it be possible to make a MOS version?

    Big thank you! It's a lot easier to know what's going on the battlefield with the banners being easy to spot. I was abusing the flash units button.

    I am updating my banners for each TATW faction in my up-and-coming total 2D rebuild.

    Very nice. I just overwrote the files via copy and paste and it worked like a charm. Nice to have the banners back with the TATW mod.
