Rome Total War Short Compaign

So I'm having my first playthrough of RTW, doing the short campaign.

My goal is to have 15 provinces and conquer the gauls. I'm 10 hours in, and a few turns away from achieving my goal. All of a sudden, the game informs me that Greece has won and asks if I wish to continue playing. I clicked yes and a few turns later achieved my goals and yet I did not win the campaign, and it's changed my campaign into the long one.

Really annoyed, it didn't explain anywhere that other factions can win before you do in the short campaign. How am I meant to know what other faction's goals are and how close they are to winning? ...

I didn't think that the AI had campaign goals but if they do, it would be the same as yours so for example a short campaign goal for another faction would be "control 15 provinces and conquer or outlast the following faction(s): Macedon" or something like that.

Yes, I realise that now, but how was I to know it before, when it didn't state in my campaign goals that other factions can win before me.

Am I meant to be continuously watching all other factions to make sure they aren't winning?

Same as yours except that they have a different faction to outlast. I think that the GCS have Macedon, Julii have Gaul, Brutii have Greece, Scipii have Carthage, etc...

When you select which faction you want to play you can see the
objectives of a faction by selecting it.

Search for "unlocking all factions" or so and you'll see how to unlock
them if you haven't already.

About AI having objectives and been able to steal victory from you:

Surprising? - yeah
Unfair? - no
Reasonable - yeah

Egypt seems to have a lot of land. Should I be getting worried about them winning the campaign? Should I send an army to take over their cities far far away from my own cities?

Play your game, this only happened to me in my very first game because I was way way way too slow. And even then I managed to win since I got the "Egypt is almost there" notice and just picked up my speed. When you get better you will never have to think about it.

Don't worry about Egypt having a lot of land. It's the goal that they have to exterminate factions. Land means naught if you don't complete objectives.

Yes, it would be nice if the game was up front and in your face about that aspect of the short campaign. I got surprised, too; and I don't like surprises like that after investing 10-odd hours in a game. One of my first, and worst, impressions of RTW.

The (very) good news is that the long campaign awaits . . .
