It's just the way the game works. It'd be unrealistic if you could churn out endless knights, would it not? You have to use what elite units you can get well, using mercenaries/professional troops and militia to fill your ranks. It's part of the challenge.

Well then you have to adapt and find a way to beat pikemen. (hint: longbows)

You can't just throw men at the enemy, charge their rear and get an instant rout like you could in vanilla, nor can you conquer everything around you and become an unstoppable superpower fairly early on. You have to really work for it, and that's part of the fun.

Also, aside from using the superior English bowmen to melt away those pike squares remember that a pike square is designed to grind through enemy formations by using the combined offensive of several rows of men together but that offense can effectively be applied along a single vector. A pike square is only effective as long as it is part of a larger cohesive formation that keeps the pike square from being flanked.

Hit a pike square in the side while its already engaged and that square is quickly going to be in trouble. How to do that? Well for starters think outside the box of linear, unidirectional combat. A classic military error is to get attached to this mental idea of 'not one step backwards' even when there's no strategic or tactical reason for that mindset. You don't have to present the Scots with a rigid linear formation. You don't have to give them a nice neat line for them to march their pike formation up too.

Go read about Cannae and think about how you could do something similar...switching to a maneuver/skirmish emphasis against strong infantry (like pikes) requires a bit more finesse but should payoff in spades because at some point that nice neat line of pikes is going to have maneuver in turn. When that happens...a whole load of opportunities should open up.

Make sure your on 6.4 because Disable Real Recuitment doesnt work on 6.3 I had that problem.

The Only Submods you really want if you wonna recuit units fast, this is what i use(some dont need 2 be used but if u use other submods its stops u from recuiting fast.

    Submods:

    Disable Real Recuitment
    Permanent Watch Towers
    Permanent Arrows
    Savage AI

Ones below Disable Real Recuitment arnt needed but if you Use things like BG I Believe it makes it harder to recuit.

    What Larkin said.

SS tries to present a more realistic medieval world where armies have a couple knights, a decent number of professionals / mercenaries, bolstered with militia. You have to make the most out of all your unit's strengths. If you prefer fighting with full stacks of elite units, SS might not be the mod you're looking for - it is possible though, but you'll need to keep casualties very low. I usually fight with small, but fully professional armies, but it takes a while before you're able to field those kind of armies. And that's not possible anymore since I'm playing with Byg's latest installment - loads of fun, but very hard.

The English are famous for their archers - use them. Longbowmen will slaughter those unarmored Scots when you use large numbers and your strong heavy infantry units are devastating when they hit the Scottish flank. Morale has been increased for all units. Those pathetic spear militia in vanilla are able to hold the line against nearly all other units for a decent amount of time. Try to use your cheap units to pin the enemy army down, and your powerful ones to deliver the killing blow into the flank or rear. It's an easy yet effective way to win battles with nearly every faction out there.

Welcome to the community and have fun - Stainless Steel is my favorite Total War mod (yet) and it's still getting better!
