A foundry for Freedom?
I am not sure where exactly this belongs but I was thinking....
Should contries just hand over freedom to other countries? or is freedom and democracy something that should be fought for and figured out by each country individually when the people want it bad enough? CAse in point is obvious(Iraq). I don't know; I was just thinking about how their national anthem would sound and thought that maybe it's something you just can't hand over. It should be forged in blood and glory and suffering. Thoughts?

Re: A foundry for Freedom?
i agree its hard to work out where to place this... but it seems to mainly evolve the ethics of inteventionist foreign policy, so i'm gonna put it in the mudpit and see where it goes...
and no, you can't force people to be free, or democratic, the people have to want it, and the change has to come from within. a country may still be ruled by a monarchical absolute ruler, its government made up of royal princes, and the country may be doing very well and the people actually happy, and well looked after...
nor is it safe to say that our particular brand of democracy will work in other societies and cultures... some elements of muslim society may object to women having the vote for instance... before universal sufferegae can be used in that society, the society has to change from within to accept it, forcing the chnage externally will merely result in the people you are changing resenting the chnage, and rebelling...
