most likely it was that they ran out of family members and the kingdom collapses because there is no leadership
Theirs. But in this case, it should be "its". The royal family died out. Either the last family member was killed in battle, or was assassinated, or died of old age or plague. I thought there was a script that prevented this situation from occurring (natural death, I mean).
Yea there definitely was I remember my first SS campaign. I was Castille and had gotten the Moors out of Iberia and I had about 5 expert assassins that I trained on rebel captains. Thinking I saw a great opportunity I tried to assassinate all the members of the Aragonese royal family. I was patient and got my assassins near the prince and his 3 brothers. I figured if I left the king I could kill him in battle or he would die of old age; he was 72 already. I managed to kill all of them in the same turn save for the king. I was feeling good so I ended the turn.
The next turn two family members pop out of nowhere. I killed them too and the next turn 2 more spawned. I did this for at least 2 more turns before I gave up. A few days later I found a thread on the SS forum that said that AI factions spawn family members if they get low. I was disappointed that I spent all that time setting up a turn where I assassinated 4 family members only to find out that it was going to be virtually impossible to kill them off that way.
They adopt new members quickly if only a few are left compared to the number of provinces. Maybe a family member was hiding somewhere (ship, crusade, foreign prince seduced by their princess in distant province or something).
I managed to have the Polish royalty die when they were down to one province. I had recently taken their secon-last province, killing their Senior Duke, and on the same turn my princess seduced a family member in their last province. The remaining family member(s) were on crusade, and when that failed the last polish province became rebel and the polish faction was destroyed.
this did not happen to me, Denmark had only the 64 year old general in the enclave of Vienna they got in a cruciade, and the rest of the 5 provinces in the north had only generals, so I as the bizantines decided to conquer that province, that had a full stack in Vienna and 2 more nearby so I attacked at night with siege weapons and killed the king and conquered the city, the other 2 turned into rebels or disbanded...
Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation
that king was the last FM, so I guess killing him any other way would have meant destruction

Aragon still had 4 provinces, I was trying to roleplay. I married their princess to my prince and was trying to kill all the family members so that when the regions rebelled, my prince could rightfully claim his inheritance by conquering those regions.
The same thing happened in a game with the Moors when I was Portugal. They had 7 N. Africa regions still and they just randomly died one turn, I wasn't even assassinating their family members, though they lost many in battle.
I was getting faction destroyed/caliph dies messages for another 3 turns afterward and some Moorish agents appeared next to Cordoba later that game long long after their faction had been destroyed.
@Agoraphobia
The agents appearing is a script that routinely gives AI factions agents, only problem is it still is activated even if the faction is destroyed.
Whoever has to face the Tuetonic Order is screwed.
I personally think if all your family members die, you should turn in to a Republic of some sort.
@Logios
The likelihood of killing a faction leader with a 24% of success without loading is almost 0. Is it physically possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.
That is just my spies not being up to date with the latest news. The mongols have established a foothold in the eastern parts. HRE is actually also stronger than shown there since France is dead.
Well you had 5 master assassins, so why not try? I did not use that assasination result further in the game, but went with that initial siege victory.
@Logios
I was still allied with Aragon. If I was caught trying to assassinate the king they would declare war and my reputation would have been destroyed.
