Sure they're great, but I'd say Alice in Chains or Rage Against the Machine is better..![]()
Someone should have told them that grunge died with Cobain, should have done something new like Grohl.

As for best bands of the '90s ... it's not like grunge was the only music movement in the '90s, there was Britpop for instance (Blur and Oasis), etc.
The defining band of the '90s was Nirvana though, even if they were only in the first part of the '90s. Why? They started grunge and you're mostly naming grunge bands as the best bands of the '90s, but there wouldn't have been grunge without Nevermind.

Best band of the 90's (in my opinion, which of course is all that really matters to me) would have to be Tool, or Alice In Chains.
Honourable mentions go to RATM, Pearl Jam, Stone temple Pilots and Soundgarden.

Soundgarden were bloomin awesome. In my esteemed opinion the order of merit of the big 4 grunge bands;
- Pearl Jam
- Soundgarden
- Nirvana
- Alice in Chains (I feel I should swap Nirvana with AoC tbh)
My favorite band of the 90s is still the Pumpkins, but Soundgarden were ace. Very ace infact.
I too enjoy RATM- in fact Audioslave are the combination of two of my favorite bands really. Cornell's voice perfectly accompanies the rest of the band.
As a guitar player, you'll quickly see that in terms music writing, Cobain's songs were basic in comparison to the other bands, particuarly Pearl Jam- who uses alot more classic rock conventions within their music, often being reminisent of the Who, or even the Beatles in some of their songs- i.e. more complex and in my opinion deep.
Soundgarden were ace because they were a little strange if you get what I mean. Very interesting songs indeed.
AoC were great- I cant deny that, but I havnt listened to as much compared with the other bands.
It's cool that Grunge bands are seeing a bit of a resurgence at the moment with PJ or AoC back in the picture at the moment. Besides Auf Der Maur said its coming back. Her word is godI think people can respect the lyrical themes much better now that crap like Fallout Boy or My Chemical Romance are determined to lower the standards, thus making it seem far... Well better. Then again it only had to contend with Brit-Pop and techno back in the day.
Ah Stone Temple Pilots were friggin cool as well. Good job we've got Weiland in Velvet Revolver really!

If were talking Grunge I would have to go with Alice In Chains, with Soundgarden at a close second.
Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were both great Fn' bands. They brought back that whole Black Sabbath "feel" to music which was missing at the time. I dont even consider those two bands grunge, they were pure old fashion doom metal, not death metal, doom metal. Big difference. Soundgarden took a different path later on but was still an amazing band, one of my favorites. Alice in Chains always kept that doomy feel to their music for the most part. Just my 2 cents![]()
Tool was the best band of the 90's and they're shaping up to be the best band in this decade as well.
That's not completley true I'm afraid.. Nirvana didn't create grunge, they were just the band that took grunge to the top 10 lists, so there would surely have been grunge without Nirvana, but no one would have defined 90's music with grunge without them.
Actually all the Seattle Bands are the best.![]()

Oasis & The traveling Wilbury's were better, but that is just my opinion.
If it wasn't for Nirvana the grunge bands would have been the same as thousands of other would be bands, before splitting up to get real jobs because no one cared about their music.Originally Posted by Zapp

Bands who played in the 90's that are better:
Bad Religion
Against All Authority
Alkaline Trio
boysetsfire
Authority Zero
Bouncing Souls
The Descendents
Flogging Molly
Fugazi
Good Riddance
Hot Water Music
The Lawrence Arms
Less Than Jake
One Man Army
Propagandhi
R.E.M.
Rage Against The Machine
Rancid
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Smoking Popes
Suicide Machines
TSOL
The Vandals
+ many others
I can't stand Oasis (or britpop generally for that matter). Liam Gallager is nowhere near the song writer he thinks he is. Personally I think his lyrics are quite childish really myself. And the guy had the audacity to claim he was a better song writer than John Lennon.
Really though, I don't tend to think that grunge is a particuarly good term for the music- few of the bands sounded like each other. Each had its own style (which I've discussed for a few of the bands earlier). It wasnt until Post-Grunge came along that the "grunge sound" really became that recognisable.
I wouldn't class Soundgarden as doom-metal myself, but I would say AoC were- just listen to Angry Chair! Bleed the Freak! Or Dirt! Very Doom Metally. Soundgarden wern't quite so metal in my opinion. In fact of the seattle bands, I really can't put my finger on what their big influence seemed to be. Nirvana was Punk, Pearl Jam classic rock etc Soundgarden I don't really know. I often think they have hints of psychadelia (*gasp*), since their songs had a kind of hypnotic quality to them...it's a hard one.

Sorry, did someoen say Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were pure old fashioned Doom Metal?
Traditional Doom Metal is Candlemass, Trouble, Pentagram, Solstice, Saint Vitus, Solitude Aeternus etc...
Anyway..
The best bands of the 90's for are vastly different to any of the bands mentioned here.
There was the whole 2nd wave of Black Metal in the early 90's with bands like Darkthrone, Emperor, Mayhem, Satyricon etc... and the burst of Doom Metal that came from the UK in the form of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost and Cathedral. All incredibly influential artists in their respective genres.
Just depends on your taste really. However, I just want to say, despite Nirvana getting most of the fame, I still think that Alice in Chains were a far, far better band.
Out of the whole grunge lot I really do not care for Nirvana. the best for me are Pearl Jam, with Alice in Chians and Soundgarden tied for second...
Although Spoonman deserves a really special mention... I still look for things to bang on when I hear it...

Yes, Layne Staley had a quite similar voice to Cobain, but Layne just sang alot better. Also, Alice in Chains songs in overall are harder to play than Nirvana songs.. Guitar isn't the instrument I play the most, but yet, I can play most of Nirvanas songs on guitar and can play about 10 of them without checking chords or tabs, and that's not the case when it comes to Alice in Chains songs.
Agreed- that's my main problem with Nirvana. The songs are good, dont get me wrong, but theres only so much you can do with power chords....Originally Posted by Zapp
