Ive started a new one with crusader states and its fun having alot of chapter houses for knights templar or hospitaller putting out powerful units for only 250-200 upkeep and then they have some very powerful special units for cheap price. So you get a hell of alot of heavy infantry and cavalry. Its also surrounded by pretty powerful enemies and the mongols will be there to deal with also. Its late era campaign.

The only problem is the units look older as the timeline goes on because they are still 12 and 13th centry era looking units. Not later plate armour units.

This might help you decide. http://www.pressdat.com/mtw2/jerusalem/Jerusalem.html

Holy roman empire has some awesome looking later units and a good color scheem

I play late era only, and so i suggest:

    Kievan Rus
    - take Constantinople and then face every possible enemies - pagan Cumans and Lithuanian hordes, Turks and Fatimids once they kill Crusaders, catholics ie: Hungary, Venice, Sicily, Poland ... and of course ... yeah ... Mongols

    Roman Empire
    - first - survive, then - restore the middleterrain powerhouse

Crusader States - finish off the infidels quickly as the Mongols are coming!

Khwarezmian Empire - this is a true challenge, simple as that - stop those Mongol steppe devils, tire them, bleed them, kill 'em all ... and then expect the Timurids Anyway, Khwarezmian rooster is simply brillant, they have everything you'll need, awesome cavalry (both, heavy armoured cav and fast ap ones, brillant horsearchers, excellent foot missile troops, great spears, javelins, AP infantry and the best, ultimate undefeated heavy infantry - Dismounted Royal Guard! These guys are DEMONS, they tear apart literally everything in terms of dismounted units, if they are fully upgraded no force can stop them.

So, if you really want something special i'd stick with the Khwarezmians

Those are some interesting choises vtec.dominion.

I keep killing the AI easily without a loss on the hardest settings so ive been trying turks to fight mongols yet i killed the mongols easily in my first battle and now the crusader one is good but im still winning too easily. Now ive got a good realm setup and the economy is coming along fast and im still very early into the game. So the Khwarezmian Empire suggestion sounds good since the mongols are right on them and you cant prepare, nor are the mongol armies weakened by the time they get to the turks. I didnt check them out before because I thought they had mostly weak eastern units at the start like the turks. I prefer the heavy units

    I might try Byzantine sometime

You may want to try BGR IV-E or V edition and Really Bad AI submods then
Combined these two greatly improves the challenge and make your campaign much more harder. I can't play without BGR now, simply addicted hehehe.
Oh, you will find both in the sub-mods section.

You can try Aragon; they haven't got very strong knights and have powerful almughavars (javelinmen) and you are threatened by spain, moors, france and genoa!
Cassius: "Our men at arms have secured the city. We've received representatives from all the best elements. The senate is with us, the knights are with us."
Brutus:"The pontifs, the urban cohorts, the lictors guild..."
Antony: "Oh, the lictors guild, very good. Only rally the bakers and the flute players and you can put on a festival."

Decided to try Early Portugal Campaign, Started of with using the army i started with by taking Lisbon so i could have a city instead of just a castle. my money went really well only using a few units in each city with a main army, my income let me build up my castle so i could recuit Spear Militia, doesnt sound like much but Peasants are not exacly the best units lol.

Reformed my army and sent to attack Seville only to be beaten there by Aragon, aided Aragon in the attack not that i wanted to i thought the rebel army attacked me to come out but turns out aragon attacked them figured it would take them atleast 2 turns but only took them 1 to build there seige stuff.

After missing out on Seville i marched on Silves. taking it without much of a problem, while i was rebuilding my army a Moor army marched on Silves hoping i retake it, i sent a small force to the bridge to try and slow them down while i brought more men down from My 2 other Settlements. i was expecting to lose the battle, when i got onto the battlefield a bridge was nowhere 2 be seen donno why. so i fought the moor army using my General and anyother cavalry i had hammer them, amazingly a mass rout helped me on 1 flank allowing me to use eveyrthing from that flank 2 stormrole the other flank picking up the win butwith heavy losses concidering i was outnumbered atleast 3/1

rebuilt my army and marched on Granada for a crusade, took Granada then formed a better armycoz Granada could build better men, but with the army i had i marched it on Cordoba and got defeated really bad because the battle map was so dark i couldnt see any of my men without being clicked on them.

My army went running back to Granada so i rebuilt 1 gd army marched on Cordoba only to be beaten for the 2nd time by Aragon, saved it then but im ganna go play now and im ganna show these spanish factions who the true rulers of Iberia really is .

I like to play Turks and Crusader States. Late Turks units are very good especially Janissaries and Qapukulu Lancers. Crusader States have powerful and good looking units. I advise them both.

True, apart from the sup-par textures the Turks late roster is my favourite in the game.
