Starting Faction
Hi there! So, I decided I wanted to download RTR, and it seems like it will take some getting used to - the whole political system for the Romans and such - and so I was wondering: what is a good faction to start out with to get used to the mod? Would it be Rome, some other one, or just anything I decide I want to choose?
Thanks!

Re: Starting Faction
Sparta is super easy, overpowered units, you can easily steamroll most of factions

Re: Starting Faction
Sparta, Aedui (barbarian, and isolated so you can ease into how they fight). I'm not sure if I would call Rome easy.

Re: Starting Faction
Thanks for the replies! I have a decent amount of experience with Rome: Total War itself and tend to play that on H/VH. Is there much of a difference between the Vanilla difficulties and RTR's difficulties?
edit: I decided I'd give the Celtiberians a go, and um... is the fog of war supposed to be gone or was that some kind of bug that disabled it? I'm as of yet unsure if I want it enabled or disabled. I'm sure I could figure things out with it enabled - and will probably choose to enable it - but I figured I'd ask.

Re: Starting Faction
That's a bug related to some script problems we're having. You can enable it by hitting the '`'-key (the one below 'esc') and then typing 'toggle_fow'. Please let me hear if you manage to open the console.

Re: Starting Faction
I disabled it when I started my Roman campaign - I killed Pyrrhus and then had a CTD, then when I did the battle again I killed him again but lost my general in a charge at the back of an already-engaged infantry unit >.<. This was of course followed by a mass route of my units, which made me sad cause that battle was actually looking kind of promising
.
And what do you mean by "open the console"?
edit: Also, why does putting a governor in a settlement kill its income? So far I've tried to put two different FMs in two different settlements and both have had their income drop dramatically - one dropped close to -1100 from 2400. Is it just certain governors that are horribly corrupt even though their character card thing doesn't mention it?

Re: Starting Faction
The Romans aren't an ideal starting faction, unless you read this article about the Roman Leadership System very well.
The console is a brownish thing which will fill the lower half of the screen and allows you to type in 'cheat codes'. Here we use it to enable the fog of war, though.

Ah, the dark transparent thing that appears in the top half of my screen when I hit ` - the button to the left of 1.

Re: Starting Faction
Yes. You should be able to type 'toggle_fow', when hitting enter after that command the fog of war should be turned on again.

Re: Starting Faction
In my opinion the Antigonids are pretty cool, too. But that's probably something for the more experienced players.

Re: Starting Faction
As I said before I don't like Rome, I'm not a fan but in RTR Rome is quite playable and historical accurate because you get allies... Campanians, Oscans, Etruscans, Venetics later etc... and I do like early Italic armies so... actually Italo-Greek is more correct... anyway if I usaully chose the Epirotes, Macedonians, Carthaginians, Selucids or Dacians in other mods now I chose to lead the Republic!
and I kind of like it! It's hard to fight against the Epirotes and Carthaginians, my personal favorites but now I can see the Pyrrhic wars from the "enemy's" point of view and I also respect the enemy so... nice! I like it! a very interesting Italo-Carthagino-Greek clash! well Celts will have a word or two to say later so... Celts and Dacians very nice too.... even if in my opinion this is a Pyrrhus based mod... it can later become a Punic or Macedon based mod so pretty nice and it's nice to know that you can also expand and face good represented armies...
Edit: oh forgot Samnites to the Roman allies lists!
so Romans, Campanians, Oscans, Etruscans, Venetians, Samnites and Bruttians!
probably some Celtic and Greek AoR too later on... and those Nuragics are neat also hope I get 'em!
