Default Egypt football riot: Tension in Cairo as protests loom

Crowds are gathering in central Cairo as tension rises after riots in the city of Port Said on Wednesday which left at least 74 people dead.

Angry fans closed off Tahrir Square and state TV ahead of a protest against police handling of the clashes.

Three days of national mourning have been declared over the riot, in which fans invaded the pitch after a match involving top Cairo club al-Ahly.

Emergency meetings of the cabinet and parliament are taking place.

Parliament opened with a minute's silence. Speaker Mohamed Saad al-Katatni said the riots were the "work of the devil" and that Egypt's revolution was "in danger".

Funerals were expected to be held after noon (10:00 GMT) prayers in Port Said.

All Egyptian premier-league matches have been postponed indefinitely.

So a supposely football riot is quickly turning into a national-wide protest, with current ruling parties accuse eachothers are plotting this unrest for private sake. I guess this crisis would be first challenge to test the will of Muslim Brotherhood.

The MB is not in control. The military still is and will be for a while.

It does not matter MB is in control or not since it is still the biggest party in Egypt, and this event would test how well MB can react towards a crisis.

The MB won't be reacting to it. The military will.

Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus. [A] necessary degree of fear, [...] frontier incidents and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention. The CIA and SIS should use [...] capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension. [Funding should be provided for a] Free Syria Committee [and arms should be supplied to] political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.

If MB is smart they should use this event to ban soccer and push for more conservative law, like certain event in 1933.

I think that horrible incident is just a symptom of the dissatisfaction all round that society. Its just a catalystic environment when you have tens of thousands of young men of age old rival sides packed together in a stadium.

The military is no solution, bread and a future is.

Sport's Event degenerating into political and urban chaos due to preexisting ideological conflicts and a shaky political structure are not new to history.

    Remember the Nika Riots?

"Steps to be taken in case Russia should be forced out of war considered. Various movements [of ] troops to and from different fronts necessary to meeting possible contingencies discussed. Conference also weighed political, economic, and moral effect both upon Central and Allied powers under most unfavorable aspect from Allied point of view. General conclusions reached were necessity for adoption of purely defensive attitude on all secondary fronts and withdrawing surplus troops for duty on western front. By thus strengthening western front [those attending] believed Allies could hold until American forces arrive in numbers sufficient to gain ascendancy."

Instead of sitting in front of the tv and swearing against politicians, people get together and express their political or religious anger and frustration in brutal ways.

I just hate how conspiracy theory explains everything in this part of the world, today when I was at school the biology teacher was talking about what happened yesterday and said that "there are foreign hands behind this"
Are you in Egypt? If so, would you say that people generally see through the conspiracy theories or do they buy into them for the most part?

    Kicking off now:

Numerous reports that tear gas is being deployed at the Interior Ministry in Tahrir Square, with AFP reporting Egyptian police are firing the gas at protesters.

I'm going to bet that was code for Jews Israel.
