The Scriptorium Writing Competition is live for the month of February! The Scriptorium has decided to make the competition a biannual event, holding a consistent winter and summer writing competition. While we're still working out the kinks, the plan is to have the Winter competition be based more around themed submissions and shorter stories, where the Summer competition might have more emphasis on a broader subject range and longer stories.

This Winter competition has the theme of Shogun. Write anything you want that in some way relates to the general theme of Shogun to enter into this themed category. Other categories are present though for those who do not desire to cater their writing to a theme. Non-Fiction, Long Fiction, Short Fiction, and Poetry are the un-themed categories.

Head on over to the announcement thread to check out the rules for submissions, and of course the shiny prizes!

    Other News

Nothing to report here, we just encourage you to get over to the writing competition and submit! We love seeing new original works come from our members, and are eager to add the best ones to our library.

The Scriptorium is not currently hiring any librarians, but as always anyone who is interested is encouraged to both apply to the Librarian usergroup (not social group, user group through your CP) and PM the chief librarian.

Blitzkrieg: Implementation and Countermeasure - Review by StealthFox

Scriptorium Thread: Blitzkrieg: Implementation and Countermeasure

Blitzkrieg: Implementation and Countermeasure Blitzkrieg. The term conjures up vivid images of tanks, planes, and infantry storming through enemy lines, seemingly unbeatable as they attack in perfect unison. When thinking about blitzkrieg many inevitably associate the tactic with Germany in World War II. However, blitzkrieg has a deeper past. Poach, in his article "Blitzkrieg: Implementation and Countermeasure," details the origin of the tactic as well as explaining the complexities of implementation and how it can effectively be countered.

Poach's article is excellently written and researched and is sure to delight those interested in military tactics or simply World War II in general. Military doctrine can easily be very confusing and extremely complicated, but Poach does a great job explaining the intricacies of both blitzkrieg and its countermeasure, defense in depth. "Blitzkrieg: Implementation and Countermeasure" is actually part of a larger series by Poach which includes Deep Operation: Confusion in Doctrine Form and Defense in Depth, with Reference to British Preparations for Sealion so be sure to also check out these great articles.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC)
The long awaited fifth instalment of the Elder Scrolls series did in many ways dominate the game scene when it was released in late 2011. The massive fantasy single player game takes place in the Nordic land of Skyrim where the player takes on a mission to save the world from dragons and civil war. Receiver of universal acclaim by reviewers and gamers alike, Skyrim seemed to be the ultimate role playing game. However as much of the hype died down, some complaints begun to surface about Skyrims less-than-perfect sides, and those might be worse than you might think.

Here can you read Snuggans excellent critical in-debt analysis of the game. He takes an detailed look at both the negatives and the positives of the game as well as analysing most of the different features in Skyrim and weighting them up against each-other in what amounts to a final score. The text is interspaced with pictures both serving as examples to illuminate his points and to show of the game in general. If you have been plying or are thinking about buying Skyrim, it is absolutely worth a read.
