    Default Need a few tips

I am a reasonably capable and experianced RTW player but I have only completed the full campaign a couple of times (mostly cos I get bored after a while) but I really want to improve so please post some useful tips on improving in both campaign and in battle mode

Try mods. That way you won't get as bored. The vanilla does tend to annoy after a few gameplays.

As for tips, I don't have many. Most tactics only apply on specific circumstances, so, and given that you have experience, generic advices won't be that helpful.

Anyone can tell you how to play this. But it isn't possible to teach you how to be a great player. You have to figure that out for yourself, as every player has a particular style. I for instance, tend to rely more on slow paced expansion and border-wars. I tend not to disperse my regions too much. It's bad for business...

    Some general campaign tips:

    • Build ports first, the ability to increse sea trade always brings about more money than going for roads, markets or farms. I'd do the rest in that order.
    • A fort with a lone unit can buy you an extra turn to prepare for a siege if you place it at a choke point.
    • The fastest way to grow your settlements is to use slavery. When you're going to capture an enemy settlement, choose which of your own settlements you want to grow. Move all governors out of every other settlement before you attack. When you capture the enemy settlement, all slaves will move to the settlement you want to grow.
    • Specialise your settlements.
    • Take on battles that will challenge you. Do a quicksave before the battle and give it a go. If you narrowly lose, load the save and give it another try doing something different. You'll improve quickly as you try out different things when faced with the same scenario.
    • Take a smaller army than the enemy and leave your stack in woods or on a hill (judging as best you can from the campaign map). The AI will often attack you during their turn which gives you an advantage.
    • Generally, family members are better used as generals than governors. This is particularly the case for Egypt and Britannia who have the best and second-best generals in the game respectively.

    Battle:

    • A few units of cavalry are sufficient to win just about any battle in the early game provided you have a general with decent command to prevent them from routing.
    • Archers are the best way to ensure minimal losses when you attack the enemy.

There are a few other little combat tips in some of the threads in my sig you can look at if you like.

I also have a Mac, but the easiest things is to bootcamp it so you can play your games on Windows. This way you can play all the same mods as everyone else on your Windows side (and still be superior to PC's when on your Mac side )
