You cannot select who will become heir. But there are mods that allow that sort of thing.
This is what i am using, works good too. > http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...+next+heir+mod
Should just point out that that submod only allows you to select the next heir, not change the currrent one. It's closest you can get in M2TW![]()
In the meantime, if you get an unwanted faction heir just send him on a suicide mission. Not being able to choose an heir is one of the most frustrating things in this game for me. I always try to keep the royal line pure. Even when you don't adopt it's frustrating when your faction heir is some administratively minded weakling.
Yeah, it's quite frustrating when a weakling with zero command, zero dread/chivalry was automatically selected as faction heir by the game itself. And btw, did you happen to know what's the meaning of "Turtling"? I came across this term a lot while browsing the threads.
it means not being aggressive with expansion, instead just holding on to your regions and building/dealing with things internally why the ai advances and expands.
People do this for different reasons:
to watch the ai play games and see what happens
waiting for the ai to develop and get stronger
they enjoy later units and don't want to fight with what they have
etc etc
but basically its a play choice, some rush every settlement and go to war as much as they can as fast as they can, some avoid wars and 'turtle' and choose to expand slowly or not at all, and the rest lay somewhere inbetween.

It would have been better if CA used the system from Medieval I for selecting the faction heir, especially if they didn't wish to give the player full control over the selection. Basically, the oldest son of the faction leader should default become heir, although if he isn't of age yet...darn, can't remember how Medieval I approached that! Wait, if I remember correctly, if the new king didn't have a son (of age? I have the game installed, will have to see how it goes again), his eldest brother would become heir temporarily. Once the new king had a son of age, I believe his brothers completely disappeared from the 'family tree', and were simply 'of Royal Blood'. Incidentally, in Medieval II there is actually a way to implement characters who have not come of age to be heirs, but it can only be done at the start of the game via files like descr_strat, it can't be done for later characters.
Another way to side-step the issue is for sons to come of age at a very young age, one if need be. They can simply be immobilised, or if possible, given nasty traits that stop them from fighting in battle at all (traits that can be removed upon hitting a specific age - but is this possible?). The reason I state the traits bit is due to the distinct possibility of your faction leader being in a location you don't want to leave the son (and I believe when a character's sons come of age, they usually appear where that character is). All that is left then is to assign the Heir Crown to them. It doesn't deal with the beginning of the game, mind you, so some work would be necessary on the family trees so that the most suitable character is classed as the heir at game start.

Simply do suecide charges with you family members hwo you don`t want to become heir.. That way, only surviving family member becames faction Heir![]()
Apologies for anyone who's message i may miss or not be able to answer
Yeah I've tried not adopting. I'm playing as England, but now my king is dead and so his heir is his son-in-law. So I think I'll send him on a suicide mission that way I can keep "Of English blood" in the royal family. He had a son but was not of age yet so the game chose his son-in-law. Doesn't make much sense to me.
The next heir mode doesnt always work though.
In my current campain, my old king is still alive (77yrs) and his son is the heir (54yrs). All fine and good.
But my heir has two sons both in their 20s. The oldest son is an idiot with an idiot name. the younger son has strong stats and a name I prefer so I handed the heir crown to him.
Then when the old king died, the new heir still passed to oldest son
Now (as king) I have to arrange an "accident" for my own son!
On the bright and funny side, a marriage proposal came in for my princess named Charles Darwin hehe

I do wish CA paid as much attention to the royal succession/court politics aspects of medieval times as they did to, say, the Pope.It would be cool to have the chance to send specific generals on missions to keep up loyalty, etc.
Even still, I don't mind so much the succession crisis (I couldn't resist). It's fun having to worry about preserving the royal bloodline, even if it is by a set of cold and arbitrary rules.
Two things CA should change in the next MTW:
- Diplomacy through diplomats; should be like NTW, where you can active diplomacy with other nations whenever you want.
- Succession; i wanna be able to choose who gets the crown dammit.
