Welcome to EB and the forums! First of all that's no bug and EB should work fine.
There's two ways to fix this 'issue':
A) Use the trivial script to launch the multiplayer-mode if you want to play custom battles, and use it to launch singleplayer-mode if you want to play a normal campaign.
B) If you use a (self-made) shortcut, go to "EB\mp game edu backup" and copy-paste the export_descr_units.txt from there to "EB\Data". If you do this and want to play/load a singleplayer campaign later on, you'll have to go to "EB\sp game edu backup" and copy-paste the export_descr_units.txt from there to "EB\Data".
If possible, use the trivial script. You can find it in EB's start menu folder.
Grab the slider ball and scroll down slowly....there are MANY units listed there and will not show if you only use the arrows. Took me weeks to figure this out.
ive never actually done a custom battle...i feel like im spoiling all the cool units i will discover throughout the gamelike seriously when i got the marian reforms and realized i could recruit those like guards in every settlement w/out a barracks i like jumped cause it was so hard defending settlements before that (w/out killing my treasury on armies or mercenaries)

Then, as throngs of his enemies bore down upon him and one of his followers said, "They are making at thee, O King," "Who else, pray," said Antigonus, "should be their mark? But Demetrius will come to my aid." This was his hope to the last, and to the last he kept watching eagerly for his son; then a whole cloud of javelins were let fly at him and he fell.
