A sneering Nicolas Sarkozy has attacked Britain for being a country with 'no industry'.
The embattled French President, who is hoping to be re-elected this Spring, made the extraordinary outburst as he defended a VAT rise during a prime time national TV broadcast.
He had just announced a 1.6 per cent hike in VAT in a move designed to boost France’s failing economy.
But when a journalist pointed out that Britain had experienced a rise in prices after increasing its VAT contributions, Mr Sarkozy - who in 2009 claimed a VAT rise in Britain had ‘absolutely failed’ to stimulate the economy - spat out the words: 'The United Kingdom has no industry any more.

This sort of rhetoric is hardly new from Sarkozy, and resorting to such a cheap tactic is no surprise coming from him any more, especially not now that he's in an election year and is behind Hollande in the polls. I'll have to look into Hollande's view on the UK as I have to admit I don't know a great deal about the man.

And can I ask that you don't choose the most Eurosceptic and downright dishonest newspaper as a source for this story, Tom? I know that Sarkozy certainly criticised the UK, but I can do without the insults and superlatives from the Mail's article.

I can't be bothered to translate all of it, but the first paragraph says:

"Industry: The UK is ahead of France

Our London correspondant: Nicholas Sarkozy declared that Great Britain "didn't have any more industry, unlike France because England, 25 years ago, chose a service economy, particularly based upon financial services". Beyond the diplomatic problems that this criticism of British economic policy could bring, Sarkozy's assertion is wrong. Even if financial services are well established in Great Britain, something that has made the financial crisis across the channel very violent, it's false to say that the UK is less industrial than France, but rather the inverse is true."

I know the article is almost 3 years old now but I doubt much has changed in those 3 years.
