    Default Fighting in venice

If anyone has ever fought inside Venice, are there actual canals inside? Or is it just a normal city?

Normal city, though there is a ditch in front of it, plus water behind the city which makes it harder to attack i suppose

On the battle map, it's a normal city.

On the campaign map, however, things are a little different.

Venice is THE ONLY CITY IN THE GAME which can only have two stacks fighting at once: one on the bridge, and one in the city. This makes it a great city for defending against qualitatively inferior, but numerically superior enemies. It can stop the Mongols in their tracks, and, if need be, can be converted into a citadel for easy Timurid killing.

Though really, if the hordes have reached Venice, they probably have so many troops they will simply kill your garrison little by little. By that stage, they probably outnumber your garrsion at least 50:1. Also, Venice's single-route access makes it almost impossible to reinforce. One army at the end of the bridge can stop your reinforcements from getting to the city, making your defense infinetely harder against the hordes.

If you leave European defence to the a. i. factions, you are doomed

You will find examples in the AAR section. Especially the Timurids often make it to Central Europe when left undisturbed. They always pop up close to the Holy Lands, where rich and developed cities offer them a good basis. Mongols may start there as well, but often they spawn in the northern steppes.

Furthermore, Timurids have better units in my opinion.

    Timurids are Mongols with elephants...
Their use of gunpowder is the only thing making them worse opponents than the Mongols (though that is enough, of course )

As for OP, the city of Venice is a completely normal city on the battle map, except for that a small part of it is flooded by sea water (like, along one of the walls) Itīs nothing to worry about, and wonīt affect your battle since you will always attack from the opposite direction (due to the bridgeway to the city that forces you to come in only that direction)

Venice occupies the only tile on the island. Attacking by sea would involve an amphibious assault, which, despite being cool, is not part of the game.

The hordes will frequently reach Venice if the player doesn't intervene. Check out ALZU's Timurid Apocalypse.
