RTW Crashes perodically right at the end of battles

Shut down everything in the background not needed by the game. Odds are you are running out of memory.

thanks.. you mean like ? quality grass? or environments? i have a pretty good computer.. i shouldnt be running out of memory.

It has happened on good computers before. It's only a 32bit game pushing everything through one core of the cpu, so it's possible in huge battles and things like MSN, Skype, doing a virus scan at the same time, cna push it to the 2gb limit.

Things like grass and shaows don't help the matter even though it looks nice.

You can also close down background services using msconfig which can free up small amounts of memory.

The other thing you can do is use IOBIT's (free) software Game Booster to put your PC into 'gaming mode' which closes down more services than I ever did manually (as it closes down print spoolers but re-opens them when you go back into Windows mode).

alright well thanks so much for your help. i really appreciate it.. i hate to do this but i have one other small thing.. i know this subject has been raised before but the other threads about it didnt provide much help to me. anywayz i'm trying to play XGM mod. and i need 1.5patch. so i downloaded 1.2 patch, then 1.3, then 1.5. and it worked fine until i got to 1.5 patch. but it kept saying 1.3 patch wasn't installed correctly. (when i installed 1.3 it didn't give me any error messages) so i'm confused. also the read me file popped up the first time i installed 1.2, and the 2nd time i installed it i didnt see a read me. any ideas? i already reinstalled my rome game 3 times because it wouldn't even play when i tried to just force the XGM mod on it without sucessfully updating to 1.5 patch. so it feels like everytime i miss up, i have to reinstall rome all over again, and it's frustrating. thanks

Do you have BI?

Assuming Vista or Win7, try installing in a folder like C:\Games?

i guess i could . no i dont have bi. i ordered it and it should be arriving on tuesday. i know if i get bi i just have to install rtw, and bi expansion and then install 1.6 patch right? b/c 1.5 is already included with the gold edition of rtw. i have read somewhere that patch 1.2 might be causing the problem. so i'm downloading 1.3 patch right now. i'm gonna try installing that and go directly to 1.5 patch instead of going through 1.2 first. is that a smart idea or not? i have windows 7.

No need to put 1.2 in between - go 1.3 and then 1.5 wise idea

The thing to do is to turn down the graphics a bit (vegetation and buildings) and see if the game remains unstable.

well 1.3..i accidentally clicked uninstall.. and it looked like my game was gone.. then i went back into 1.3 and reinstalled it..then i installed 1.5 and it worked.. so thanks for all.. these mods are awesome... so i can't have SPQR 8.0 and Greek Extended Mod, and Realism mod installed at the same time? am i gonna have to reinstall rome, and the patches and just install SPQR in order to play it? and where do i play it? do i just click the shortcut for RTW?

If the mod is 'mod foldered' (most mods are - apart from RSII) then they can share the same install.

A non 'mod-foldered' mod needs it's own install. Simply copy the 'Rome - Total War' folder to another folder and install the mod there.

Personally, I keep each mod in it's own folder so they don't interfere with each other.

so i need to install rome in two different areas? is that even possible? i copied all the rome files to another location, and then installed spqr but it didnt work.

You only ever 'install' once as the Windows Registry keeps track of such things.

Once you've got a working copy of R:TW simply copy it to another location (with a different name).

So, for instance my R:TW is in "c:\games\Rome - Total War" - I copy that folder to "c:\games\RSII" and then apply the mod to that folder.

Keep the original folder clean (quite often referred to as 'vanilla') and you should never have to uninstall/reinstall again as the original install should be unchanged.

it was clean, until i installed total realism mod.. is there anyway i can only copy the original rome files? or is realism mod intertwined right now in my original rome files?

Most mods will state that you need to install them on a 'clean' install of R:TW.

Maybe a mod foldered one does not need that. However, time and time again I've seen mods fail because they were not installed on a 'clean working copy of R:TW'......

i have got it working thanks for all your help.. my mods work great now.. but i'm having trouble finding Roma Surrectum 1.6 download. it seems like all the links to download that mod are gone, or banned. i've been searching pages for hours with no luck, and all the torrent pages want me to pay them for a membership. any help thanks?
